This is hilarious. It reminds me of nothing more than that scene in E.T. where Elliot is showing E.T. all the Earth things in his room.

"This is Coke. It's a drink. You can't drink this though, because this is fake."

Of course, I had my Thurstons confused, and thought I was in for something considerably upscale...

I can honestly say, without risk of hyperbole, this post is more amazing than all of the rest of the metafilter posts put together. Seriously, what a fucking artifact. Sonic Youth changed my life in so many ways, and this was recorded just at the moment they were peaking creatively. God damn, that was fun to watch. Thurston Moore >> John Lennon.

"Nicholas Cave, a singer from England"
Pretty sure this is intentional, like nearly everything else in these videos.

"And here's our piano, where Sonic Youth pretty much score all of our work. *CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG*"

It's so beautifully plausible.

I love how there is "LSD 25" in Kim's cabinet.

I actually bought that cassette he mentions in the first clip when it came out. Spoken word with Lydia Lunch and Michael Gira. It was awesome and disturbing as hell. Which is also how you could describe the Swans back in 1986.

Holy jesus this is so goddamned funny, I can't handle how dry Thurston's wit is! As if I didn't love him before!

Well, I mean, he is, though. Has been since before Sonic Youth existed.

I'm reminded of a thing that happens up here all the time, when people say that Joni Mitchell (or any of five dozen other people) is quintessentially Canadian, despite the fact that she's lived in the USA for half a century. Yeah. Alright. Sure.
