Stian Korntved Ruud is nearing the end of a yearlong project in which he designs and crafts a unique wooden spoon every day. He's using hand tools exclusively. You can follow the results and see a little of the process on instagram. Via core77.
Spoooooon!
(it turns out that the spoon has a more interesting history, and considerably more variation, than I would have expected.)

Everyone's entitled to a couple of off days.
But seriously, even the non-spoon spoons are great.

Some of those look like they hit the magic spot of being both beautiful and functional. I'd love to see and handle them, to get a feel for the materials and balance. I like this project.

This is awesome; thanks for sharing it.
I actually just started learning how to whittle this past weekend, and have been seriously considering making a spoon which would be vastly inferior to most of these. My first project was a bird, and I was way more happy with the result than I expected to be. My toddler daughter loves it and now it lives in her hand-me-down dollhouse.

Two Christmas's ago, my mom somehow found out that my partner wanted a new slotted spoon for cooking because we had one metal spoon and one wooden spoon and that was it. She endd up getting him 9 different kinds of large spoons for cooking, which, though lovely, seemed ridiculous.
I hope I never have to go back to not having 9 different kinds of spoons, and this list makes me think I want even more.

Wow. These are wonderful. But I get the ghost-walking-on-your-grave creepy-wiggins from touching wooden utensils. So there is a completely unintended feeling of dread I get looking at these pictures.

I have been having a really bad day. Scrolling through these scores of spoons has been an unexpectedly soothing distraction from the personal crap and work crap and pilots committing murder crap of the day.

If you want to watch a small log turned into a wooden spoon, check out Jon Prown.
(He's also an fabulous ukulele player, which I wouldn't think goes well with using sharp hand tools.)

How is instagram's web experience so awful? (640px photos do look dumb on a tablet or desktop display, but still).
The spoons, they are amazing.
