Oh hey, I used to work with Mark Bedau! When I was a student at Reed, he was a great mentor for me. Some 8 years before this paper, but generally on the topic of emergence.

Mark Bedau's father Hugo was a brilliant philosophy professor at Tufts when I was there back in the 20th Century. He was a powerful voice against the death penalty.
