RIP Rico Rodriguez, most commonly know simply as 'Rico', the reggae and ska trombonist. He worked as a solo artist as well as with many other bands and musicians including Prince Buster and Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra but was probably best known as a member of The Specials.
Rico Rodriguez, his time at The Specials
The Specials - A Message to You Rudy
Rico Rodriguez - Man From Wareika (the whole album)
Rico Rodriguez - Trombone Man
Jools & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra with Rico Rodriguez - I'm in the mood for love.

First heard of him via his recording of "What You Talkin' Bout" on the WOMAD Music and Rhythm album, which was always a fave cut.

I play trombone in a rock band full of public school music teachers. Rudy is one of our favorite songs to play.

Dang it, too many great musicians dying. Place is turning into some sort of ghost town.

Wow. Just had "The Specials" in the CD player this morning on a whim. Formative stuff for me in high school. Enjoy yourself ... it's later than you think.

This is sad.
I love the unashamed simplicity of some of Rico's playing. I find myself humming the solo from The Specials' Rudy on an almost daily basis.

Saw him live with the Specials many moons ago. At one stage just about all of my favourite records seemed to be enhanced with extra added Rico. He seemed to be everywhere.
