Women with a Movie Camera

How does it blinker our perception of cinema’s history when picture after gorgeous monochrome picture of elaborate movie sets have as their focus a white male director? As part of Sight & Sound magazine's Female Gaze issue, Isabel Stevens has compiled a collection of images of women directors at work.

This is great! Oh, and next time someone asks who I was in a former life, I am going to claim Ida Lupino. Except, you know, she died when I was past 30. But still...

Great pictures. Like to see a few more contemporary directors represented but nice to see so much history.

The "You Must Remember This" episode on Ida Lupino is fascinating - "star cum director" just scratches the surface.

I am really glad that I saw this -- I hope that these pictures help me imagine women, instead of just men, when I call up the mental image of "a director".
