The Stallman insult and angry ranting about big bureaucracies are how you know the author is hardcore about innovation.

While it wasn't free or "open-source," the PCC Streetcar was a more-or-less modular and standardized design that ended up gaining widespread popularity around the world (notably on both sides of the iron curtain). Even though the design dates from the 1930s, many are still in use today.

What's happening in open source right now is that companies are using open source projects to cooperate on their low-value interchangeable development, while making money on high-value proprietary stuff. IBM and Red Hat share their work on the Linux kernel, Hortonworks and Cloudera share their work on Hadoop. Then they all put in their own high-value features and sell through their own channels.

This would be like GM and Ford deciding to cooperatively develop the boring parts of cars -- the suspension, the brakes, the airbags -- while keeping the fun interesting stuff like nav systems and engines to themselves. Which I think they already do to some extent, since many of the boring parts are standardized and interchangeable across a few brands. But the car will always have a GM or Ford nameplate on it and be sold by their respective dealerships.

>In the vein of open source, however, Capin said that it was important to the company that none of the community members live off their contribution to Local Motors.

Wut? Why not? What does living off contributions have to do with open source? Open source is just about licencing.

Is this something I would need a driving licence to understand?
