And the stepped-on-red-streamers one is an 8-bit style recreation of an image from the anime Trigun. It's the main character, Vash, sitting on a rock while his long red coat flaps in the breeze.

Not really any worse than Goth Goose of the Week or Fugly or any other of a long line of such sites.

well, i thought about it. and i dig it.
if anyone gets bent over this little hobby of theirs, they need to lighten the fuck up. if the most important thing about one's life is ones's lj icon, one really doesn't have a life, and should be made to go out and get one.

From what I understand, it was formed more as a natural outlet for the "oh, my, this is inappropriate/ugly as sin. Why is someone using this to represent themselves?" reaction. For example: news of someone's father/grandparent dying, and another user posts condolences, but uses an icon of a smurf farting on a grave...
