There's a world somewhere where Wait For It and especially The Room Where it Happens are gigantic hits outside of just Broadway, and its totally justified.

It's exciting to see someone who's clearly going to be a huge star get his chance and nail it.

I saw Hamilton a couple of weeks ago, and it was just as amazing as I'd hoped it would be. But what really surprised me is how much it is Leslie Odom Jr.'s show. You can't take your eyes off of him. Even when he's in the background, doing his shady Aaron Burr business, you just have to watch him. "The Room Where It Happens" is not one of my favorite songs on the cast album, but I loooooved it on stage because it's a giant Leslie Odom Jr. showcase. I mean, I knew Odom would be a standout because he is so good on the cast album, but live was just a whole nother level.

Lin Manuel Miranda is the genius creator (and I love him for it) and plays the character the show is named after, but Odom is the star.

I'm holding out hope for the Hamilton Mix Tape turning a bunch of the songs into radio hits. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already, but then again, Hamilton is a huge hit among the Kids, and how many people under 25 even listen to the radio these days?

The cast album did debut at #12 on the Billboard 200 last October, and peaked at #1 on the Broadway AND rap album charts. I don't know if that counts as gigantic hits but it's definitely indicative of the widespread popularity of the album.

I agree with lunasol, it's Odom's show once you've seen it in person. I saw it in February, and put on Facebook after: "No matter how good you think it is going to be, it's better than that. Particularly Leslie Odom Jr, who is transcendent as Burr on stage in a way that he isn't on the album. You feel him, every minute."

I still think that today, with the cast album in heavy rotation. I hear it differently now, because there is Odom in every corner of the music, delivering.

"The Story of Tonight" has been covered by pop group We The Kings. It's playing on the top hits station on Sirius, so the spread of the music from Hamilton into the mainstream has started.

Oh, it's happened. I don't think I like it much (/curmudgeon), and it's just a cover, not the Mixtape, but I've heard it on the radio more than once.
posted by donnagirl at 8:20 AM on April 29, 2016

donnagirl, yes! Seeing it live changed how I listen to it in a lot of ways, but especially in terms of Odom's performance.

I also agree with this:

No matter how good you think it is going to be, it's better than that.

After I saw it, people kept asking me if it lived up to my expectations, and my response was "it exceeded them, and I'm not even sure how that's possible." It's really just an extraordinary experience.

It hurts pretty deep that I'll never get to see the original cast. The only hope is that they'll manage to get a filmed production made and I'll get to see it at a Fathom event at a movie theater.

He is SO GOOD though. There's so much of his stage presence that makes everything better. Everything.

Like most people I've only listened to the cast album and not seen Hamilton, but after a couple dozen listens it's incredibly clear to me that Odom's performance is the heart of the show. The writing and music would make Hamilton a masterpiece regardless of the performances, but the way Odom realizes Burr just pushes it into transcendence. My favorite moments of the cast album pretty much all involve him. More than that, though, as the narrator he also just ties the whole thing together and makes it feel complete in some ineffable way.

Every interview with him that I read or watch just increases my admiration for his philosophy about performance and the way he approaches it and this one is no exception.

Wow, that We The Kings cover is like the whitest thing I've heard in a while.

It wants to be blared at the end of some Nicholas Sparks adaptation, where an old convertible is driving along a beach towards the sunset, with Generic White Blonde/Brunette Female in the passenger seat while Generic White Male nods along to the music.

Roll the credits.

I really wanted to see this with the original cast. I could probably do it too, but I could't really justify the like $1000+ dollars in travel, hotel, and ticket price it would probably cost me.

Related daily dose of cute:

Every year there is a gala show to benefit Equity Fights AIDS, during which a lot of the current Broadway show casts will also do some kind of spoof music number or come up with some other fancy things as a lighthearted "competition", alongside their other more serious competition of "who's raised the most money for the fund". At this year's gala, the kids from Fun Home teamed up for "Gee, Mr. Miranda", in which they made an appeal to Lin-Manuel to write a show for kids.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it goes! Right after I bought my ticket, I was proselytizing to a friend about it and being like "Just listen to it, really" and she finally said "um, didn't you just spend hundreds of dollars on a ticket? I don't think I need that kind of obsession."

... But then she saw Lin Manuel on John Oliver's show and now she's trying to talk herself out of buying tickets, which are now even more expensive.

I've listened to it enough that I can get through "It's Quiet Uptown" and "the orphanage ..." without actually crying (most of the time), but the part of "The World Was Wide Enough" after the duel just kills me every time. The way he sings "I hear wailing in the streets"* ... every time.

Oddly, when I saw it, the only part that made me cry was "Helpless." I think the hopefulness of that song really got to me, knowing what was coming next. OK, yeah, I cried at the orphanage. I'm not made of stone.

*I actually really, really love that little bit with the wailing chorus. Apparently it's from a cut song about Washington's death, and I really wish I could hear that whole song.

Took my wife for her birthday last Tuesday, and even with all the hype and anticipation, like Lunasol said it still exceeded our expectations. Just a marvelous show, both performance and music. (I'd deliberately not heard any of it before going in besides the Grammy performance.) And Odom is fantastic - when he sings "Now I'm the villain of your story" it's crushing - but honestly, the whole cast is pretty much amazing. I like musicals but this is the first time I've listened to a cast album after a show. And I'm doing it repeatedly.

- Ham4Ham
- The Genius.com annotations, with well-researched notes on musical influences, historical basis, and general nerdery. There's hours worth of reading to be done here
- The Hamilton apocrypha collection on Genius, with deleted songs and bonus material.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda Performs at the White House Poetry Jam (Hamilton 0.1)
- The Hamiltome: The musical, in book form
- Spoiler warning: the short scene that's not on the album
- LMM's Twitter, chock-full of daily awesomeness

Seconding the genius annotations as vital. I saw someone say a while ago that Hamilton relies on three things: real history, musical/broadway history and hip-hop history. I know the first two pretty well, but the annotations are great at 1) showing me how little I got even of those two, and 2) pointing out all the hip-hop references.

Hamilton: The Revolution (the book) aka Hamiltome is a lot better than the genius annotations though.

Eh, I'm not sure I agree actually. The book is great, don't get me wrong, but the Genus annotations dive into some really specific details like "this is cribbed from The West Wing" or "the drumbeat here is the same one we heard at the end of Yorktown" or "this actually happened three years later in real history." The book tells you more about how the entire show is constructed, but the annotations have some great deep dives on individual lines.

Why choose though? Read both!

My boss's twins (16 year old theater kids) have been getting her into Hamilton — apparently this was the week they allowed her to listen to the last third or so. I had also warned her about the ALL THE FEELS section.

Odom has so much presence on the cast album, but what intrigues me in the article is how he finds different aspects to delve into in every performance. I'm quietly reminding myself that there is No Way In Fucking Hell that I can afford to go.

She's just showing this heartbreaking depression- when he walks by her side and talks to her she is /completely nonresponsive/, and it's this heartbreaking thing of him trying to pull her back from the depression brink. Really I think someday this will all be filmed, it's just they are literally printing money with it right now.

The beautiful thing about that stage direction is they just stand there, letting the ensemble pass by around them. It would have been easy to do the cliche thing and spin them around on the turntable for their walk through the park, but they don't go there. They just stand there. And eventually she just reaches over a couple inches and takes his hand. Can you imagine?

I believe it's completely sold out through January 2017. People who haven't seen it yet should sign up here to find out when the next batch goes on sale and then be in front of the computer when they do. I got my tickets at Broadway.com, and they currently say "I'm sorry - this show has no seats available for any active performance" when you click on the Hamilton calendar. However, the seats I ended up buying were not there the first three or four times I looked. I have no idea what is up with that, and I am not about to question whatever grace got me two face-value tickets to see this extraordinary show with its original cast.

This was also true for the TicketMaster verified resale tickets back in November, so that might be worth checking out as well. If you happen to be in NY a few hours before a show with nothing better to do, it might be worth downloading the TicketMaster app and periodically refreshing the verified resale tickets for the upcoming show. Those are also guaranteed + instant delivery.

(My husband and I are going Memorial Day weekend with tickets we bought in October -- it was basically the soonest we could get the lowest priced tickets with full view and not in the rear mezzanine).
