Met him once at a TCM Classic Film Festival. He seemed like an incredibly unassuming, gentle, almost shy man. He presented two of his favorite films: "In A Lonely Place" and "The River" and they quickly became my favorite films.

He got Kim Basinger and Eminem Oscars. That puts him in the top percentile of filmmakers in history. Oh, and then he directed an episode of Greg the Bunny, so he clearly had a pretty good sense of humility as well.

Oops, I just remembered, he didn't show "The River" by Renoir, he showed "Wild River" by Kazan…

I just saw In a Lonely Place for the first time a few weeks ago. I can see why he loved it, LA Confidential definitely shares a lot of DNA with it.
