Oh, those Russians.

The first version of this song I heard was this cover by Boiled in Lead, which in my mind will always be the definitive version.

Oh here's a bonus almost-story: A couple years later, I happened to sat next to Josef Kessler, the erstwhile fiddler from Boiled in Lead, on an airplane. He had a cool Tetris wrist-watch. The end.

I am ashamed that until today I did not realize the similarity in names of the two historical Russians... From now on, I will only refer to Vladamir "Ras" Putin.

Original Video. I prefer the FPP version by far.

Greatest thing I've seen, ever. It took a second viewing to spot the Techno Viking. Off to watch it again.

Well, off to listen to Boney M. See you in a bit.

Also, fist bumps in Soviet Union had to be done using a hammer and sickle, due to branding issues, as decided by Yekaterina Furtseva in 1972.

It's only 6:45 in the morning, and I get a hit of Boney M? This promises to be a great day!

I'm trying to decide whether this is pro-Putin or anti-Putin and I'm not having much success.

I'm pretty sure they used to play this song at the skating rink when I was of that age, and that + high school communist flirtations + great modern meme cultural references is hitting so many pleasure centers in my brain.

Also, a bit of trivia thanks to Wikipedia:
[Boney M. singer Bobby Farrell] died on the morning of 30 December 2010, in a hotel in Saint Petersburg, of heart failure. His agent John Seine said Farrell was complaining of breathing problems after performing with his band the evening before. Farrell's body was reportedly discovered by hotel staff after he failed to respond to an alarm call....Very soon after his death was reported, it was observed to have occurred on the anniversary of, and in the same city as, the death of Rasputin, described in Boney M's eponymous hit single, in a case of life imitating art.

Looks like nobody's yet posted the awesome Boney M video (replete with fake Rasputin beard on Bobby Farrell).

And this is what the famously irresistible man actually looked like (Rasputin, not Farrell).

So, neither the original of the excellently timed version that splitpeasoup posted actually have any funk in them. I'm waiting for someone to find a Parliment song that works with it, so there can be dangerous levels of funk in the soundtrack as well as the music video.

Slap*Happy, I love the movie version of the Red Shoes, but you have vastly undersold how awesome this video is. When I think Red Shoes, I think Hans Christian Andersen, not a bare-chested Vladimir Putin definitively establishing himself as Russia's greatest funk machine.

Ma Baker is my fave Boney M track, for that nice bouncy beat, kinda similar to the classic Rasputin sound.

Other Boney M trivia: a Frank Farian production, also responsible for Milli Vanilli; not my thing, but I think kinda treated hard in the media back at the time merely for being a manufactured product.

Will also accept The Meters' "Look-a-Py-Py" as a way to move the needle into the red.
