This weekend, Chicago-raised, New York-based free music trumpeter Jaimie Branch released Fly Or Die, her debut album as a leader. Interview [via Aquarium Drunkard]. Feature article [via the Chicago Reader]. Nice introductory video by her label International Anthem.

Yes, she's great.

Great stuff—I hear a little Lester Bowie, a little Tomasz Stańko, a little Don Cherry, and a lot of Jaimie Branch. Thanks for the post!

That whole record is a superstar line-up. Can't wait to see Branch and the ensemble live. I've seen several of the other musicians much more recently, but the last time I saw Branch might've been nearly ten years ago when she played in a friend's garage.

I'm not the biggest fan of free jazz, but I listened to this from Fly or Die and quite liked it. it was a lot more melodic and coherent than I was expecting, and the rhythm section was aces.

Thanks for the post.

Actually, I'd forgotten that I'd seen Branch a little more recently. She performed with an iteration of the High Life in '11. You can watch one of those sets here.
