awww, they're so cute (I watched second link).

I used to have a raccoon that would sit on my window ledge and look in at me and it really scared me. There were several living on the roof and they would make a ruckus every night, so my landlord said they were going to put traps up there. Now I feel sad and guilty. They seem so smart and fun. (but for sure I would have freaked out if one from outside got into my apartment).

I think raccoons are adorable but I don't think I could ever feel relaxed around a raccoon.

I had a couple of semi-tame raccoons as a kid, but they wound up returning to the wild. I also used to live in Hongdae, very close to where that cafe is now.

Still not into going there. Something about it gives me the squicks.

I mean they're cute, but the things they'll do to chickens…

A family of raccoons got friendly with me my first summer in Toronto, a couple of apartments ago. We all liked hanging out on my deck, as the tree that shaded it was the main route from the abandoned courtyard where they lived and the rooftops where they seemed to get around. They got used to me, lying in the hammock I'd strung up to the tree and the younger ones started approaching, grabbing onto me with their smooth little fingers. One, slightly bolder, was like a puppy, nipping and wanting to play fight.

I was going to post something about battling wild raccoons back when I had backyard ducks but I thought, nah, don't threadshit. But then I got to part in the video were the raccoons in the cafe start attacking the recording equipment and fighting...

Baylisascaris procyonis Roundworm Seroprevalence among Wildlife Rehabilitators, United States and Canada, 2012–2015
Baylisascaris procyonis roundworms can cause potentially fatal neural larva migrans in many species, including humans. However, the clinical spectrum of baylisascariasis is not completely understood. We tested 347 asymptomatic adult wildlife rehabilitators for B. procyonis antibodies; 24 were positive, suggesting that subclinical baylisascariasis is occurring among this population.

I don't know how raccoons ended up in Korea, but in Japan they were imported as gifts for children after they saw a cartoon. Now Japan has a huge problem with the invasive species.

I don't think I could ever be relaxed around a raccoon because they're a bit infamous where I'm from for carrying rabies. Any raccoon that's not running from you is considered a threat, it's possible rabies behavior. However, I now live in Japan, which is an official Rabies-Free Zone (no kidding, it was a laborious and expensive 6 month process just to bring my dog) and most people find raccoon adorable and not at all threatening.

Cute raccoon found it's way into the walls of the upstairs neighbor one night, totally ruined their living room before the animal control officer could be located. But so cute sitting on the lovely white couch.

My wildlife rehabber partner outright refuses to work with raccoons due to raccoon roundworm. It can survive on surfaces for something upwards of a decade, and the only reliable way to kill it is fire. So if you're a rehabber who works with raccoons, you basically need a special raccoon-only cage that you never use for any other species and can survive having its content burned between patients. (Which is how the larger rehab operation she worked at used to handle them.)

I'm sure the cafe screens its critters for illnesses like roundworm, but even still...

They're cute buggers, though.

Raccoon cafes?

Around these parts we call those "green bins."

Capybara PSA: Toronto's famous escapee capybaras, Bonnie and Clyde, recently had a litter of three.

You can help name them.

Aww, I started feeling sorry for the little guys.

My apartment building has a large dumpster like this. One day I lifted the lid and saw a pair of eyes staring at me from the darkness. I screamed and slammed it shut. Something had previously chewed or scratched a hole between the lids, so the raccoon hurriedly climbed out through it and took off like a shot. I open it extremely slowly now - my main fear is getting a raccoon in the face.
