I'm watching a submersible untangle Christmas lights on the ocean floor. Yay!

This is part of the underwater ocean observatory program. On these dives, they're installing equipment to be able to continuously monitor the organisms and the environment of the sea floor in the Inside Passage/Salish Sea area (mostly). As their info page says, this work is to 1) install fish monitors to examine if and how fish "talk"; 2) look at sediment characteristics and dynamics in the Fraser delta (which we know surprisingly little about); 3) to instrument the Endeavour hydrothermal vents.
Professionally, as well as personally, this is deeply, deeply cool stuff.

Today they appear to be doing task 3, btw. They're at a older, cold vent today, but will be at the hot vents in the next few dives.
