Kelan Phil Cohran has died. The pioneering jazz musician was a member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, a cofounder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a teacher, and the father of lots of equally talented children. Haven’t heard his music and unsure where to start? Here’s a primer from Zaid Mudhaffer, or just jump into this huge Youtube playlist. (previously)

My spouse interviewed him a few years ago for an oral history project about art and activism.

A giant - was very happy to finally get a chance to hear his music when reissues started to appear widely around a decade ago.

I expect I saw him live once or twice but picking out an individual performance at an Arkestra performance would be like a needle in a haystack during a full on tornado. Well the tornado sounds would be calmer and less intense but you get the picture.

I'm a fan. On the Beach and The Malcolm X Memorial are both good starting points.
