Was tun... wenn's jefeiert, wa? #partypolizei #sexorgy

After a particularly raucous night of partying, Berliner police assigned to the G-20 summit in Hamburg were recalled last week.
The police, who had not yet been deployed in advance of the summit were recalled, and the social media team defended their colleagues as only human, as a Facebook post (sorry, link is both FB and in German, but FB offers the option to translate) which explains that "Yes, we partied! ... at a closed site (a container-village about 70km north of Hamburg), our police drank, danced, pissed, and, as the press so lovingly put it, fucked. ... now #partypolice and #sexorgy are part of the story ... A lot is under discussion, but we'd like to invite you to look at their professional work... for (the work), we'd like to give them a thumbs-up and #goodjob.".
At least one Berliner organisation has welcomed their prodigal sons and daughters back with open arms, as the Clubcommission Berlin has responded: ""Barely 10 days before the meeting of the world's political elites, Berlin's operation team has fulfilled its function as role models and organised a great party - traditionally costumed in uniforms, with music and excessive live performances."

I think a closer translation of "gebumst" might be "bonked." Which is so much funnier than the f word (well, I'm laughing, at least).
I don't speak German very well, but this is now one of my favorite sentences in that language and is inspiring me to fire up Duolingo again.
"Dabei wurde getrunken, getanzt, gepinkelt und ja scheinbar auch "gebumst", wie es unser Pressesprecher so schön formuliert hat."

Do you have a citation on the bum / ass association, hippybear? I'm not a very good German speaker, but my understanding is bumsen is slang for sex in general, and comes from a literal meaning of "thump" as in thumping a drum or piece of wood to make a noise.
That Facebook post is a thing of beauty. Can you imagine an American police force writing something like that?

To be fair, they do not seem to have killed anyone, tried to kill anyone, beat anyone up (besides, maybe, each other), or, say, covered up serious life-threatening crimes, so that puts them ahead of many sober police departments.

"Yes, we partied, it was great, fuck you" - this is the most Berlin response ever and I'm so glad Berlin-ness extends to the Polizei

As a native German speaker the bumsen-bum connection is news to me. My understanding of the word's etymology is that bumsen is a case of onomatopoeia. The true equivalent in English would be banging if anything.

It's not like false etymologies never spring up and get widely accepted in English. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, anyone?

As an American who learned schoolyard German at the age of thirteen, my memory is that "bumsen" is indeed, as Hairy Lobster confirms, the way that middle-schoolers talk about sex, and well translated by "banging." I recall in particular that it was considered very witty in chemistry class to refer to the gas flames invented by the nineteenth-century discoverer of cesium as "Bumsenbrenner."

I lived in Berlin for a short time, about ten years ago, and reading about this makes my heart swell with joy at the memory of that city and its beautiful people. I miss it dearly.

IMO, this was a genius move: they got to party till 6:30 AM (impressive!), had outdoor sex, got on the door of all the Berlin clubs, and were relieved from street fights in Hamburg which regardless of one's political opinion probably weren't a nice experience for the police. What's not to love?

'Bumsen' is boinkin' or bangin'. My kids let this fly when they're testing boundaries, though thankfully not with grandparents around.
The news had way less fun with this than I expected - there's pretty good tabloid press here and they were pretty blasé about the whole thing. Part of Berlin's reputation is that it's isn't as 'professional' or 'civilized/westlich' as the rest of 'normal/ western' Germany. So this was all a little 'peinlich' 'embarrassing for the home team. To which the FB reply was the absolute pitch-perfect reply.

From my 54yr old Hamburger OH 'definitely from bumsen, doesn't have the humourous connotation of bonk or boink....until kids started owning term it used to denote low class, uneducated speaker....'
Interesting our cousin is with HH police force. She thought this was hilarious, didn't get why they were sent home.

Yeah, I don't see why this is a problem. Pepper-spraying someone in the face, now that's a problem. Having a party with coworkers outside of work hours? Not a problem.
Once again, we've got our priorities totally ass-backwards.
