Star Trek's George Takei scoops LA Times by two months. Los Angeles is so big that The Valley wants to secede as does Hollywood.
Takei, who grew up in LA, pointed out in his web site months ago that if Hollywood split away, the world famous sign, which isn't technically in Hollywood would be on LA real estate.
Not until today, LAEXAMINER.com reported, did the LA Times seem to think this newsworthy.
It should be noted Takei has been politically active for years, both in Asian-American and local civic circles, including holding appointed office. Just in case you thought this was out of the blue.
All power to Welch & Co. at the Examiner, who have been pointing out the gaps in the Times's local coverage for a while now, but I'm not sure it's earthshaking that a neighborhood civic booster figured this out before they did!

No, but it goes to show the continuing suckage that is the LAT. I hope Dick Riordan's new paper will be as good as the Examiner boys keep saying it will.

I don't get all this nonsense about 'secession'. Unless Holly wood is going to put itself onto a truck and drive 20 miles further away from LA (a la Springfield) it'll still be a suburb of LA. It's about as stupid as Brooklyn splitting from New York City. Oh well, I don't pretend to understand these issues. If I did, I'd be out helping the Israelis and Palestinians.
One way of solving this is to just change the sign to say 'LOS ANGELES' ;-) I make such a great diplomat.

The main issue, of course, is the belief that LA is just getting too big and ponderous for it's own good. Aside from Hollywood, there are other parts of LA that are looking to secede; a couple of relevant articles (for starters) here and here. Yeah, it'll still be a 'burb of LA, but really it comes down to having better control of their own fate.

Well, probably now it is, but when NYC was consolidated 100 years ago, there was a LOT of opposition. At that time, Brooklyn itself was, I think, one of the five-largest cities in the US.

Damn, I get better local news from the world service than I do from the local media.
