The Sphinx - Scotland's longest lasting patch of snow - is about to vanish... it has only done so six times in the last 300 years.

That's an awfully weird way to say it has only done so six times in the last 84 years.

Perhaps it's been getting warmer or something in the last 84 years compared to the previous few hundred.

The little ice age started around 300 years ago; presumably before that we didn't normally have snow there year round. The implication is that the sphinx snow patch is 300 years old.
