Holy hell; what a great video! And a great idea to break the letters into bits to make it just another combinatorial problem. The whole thing is explained clearly and concisely ... it's like the antithesis of the rest of Youtube.

I love Tom7 so much, thanks! I wish I had an hour to watch the longer video right now.

That was really charming! I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of Tom7 videos before, probably via MeFi, and I should make more of a point of keeping track of his stuff.
The video is also close to my heart on the decomposed letter front: I spent some time right around the start of this year building out an experimental typeface (that I ended up calling Pipe Minimal and haven't touched in months) that worked specifically off the premise of all glyph forms being composed only of quarter-circle arcs and straight line segments with a length the radius of said circle.
Like Tom says: s is an awful letter. When I was showing it off, I got more complaints/suggestions about the lower case s than about everything else combined.

There should be a word for when you hit subscribe even before watching the video all the way through. Instasub or some shit. Usage: That was so good that by the end I felt like unsubscribing so I could instasub a second time.
Also, a word for when you encounter someone way smarter than you and it gives you that sense of giddy delight.

Speaking of the letter S, here's an essay by Don Knuth on the topic.
