Ratt featuring Marvin Gaye?

I Heard it Round and Round the Grapevine. A mashup of Ratt's "Round and Round" and Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", a combination that works better than one might expect. (slyt)
I have extremely conflicting feelings about Stayin' A Hollaback Girl. The first two bars of the chorus fit so well together! But the second two bars are so unsatisfying without the high notes!

It mostly works! They changed some of the notes and left others to make it feel authentic. To their credit, the two songs are in the same key, though one is minor and one is major.

This is an absolute desecration of a classic.
Ratt must be rolling in their grave.

I love both of the songs. I don’t know that I’ll ever listen to them again except in this way. They were clearly meant to be together.

Grapevine makes an excellent vocal line for the Ratt song, but that harmonization makes the melody a lot less interesting. In the original arrangement, Gaye's melody is hitting notes that are dissonant with or a satisfying note in the chords of the accompaniment. (Sorry, my music theory sucks too much to be more specific.) In this mashup, his vocal line mostly just goes along with the chords of the Round and Round.
The best part of this arrangement is where he sings "you could have told me yourself that you love someone else" right before the chorus. There the melody and accompaniment fit together in a very cool way.
It's still a surprisingly good combination.

Harmonically, this one works better, but only because the original songs are pretty much modal

Pretty good, but doesn't top "I Got More Than A Feeling".

It's not a bad mashup, but it really just made me want to go listen to the Marvin Gaye original, which truly is amazing.

It turns Grapevine into something from the closing credits of an 80s buddy cop movie.

I love mashups that help me re-hear the originals. This is great – thanks for posting it!

What is this sorcery? And how does someone notice this works in the first place?
