I got a little frustrated that the later illusions didn't show alternative angles that made the operating principle clear.

I have stepped frame by frame through 6th Generation Deformable Object a dozen times now and I still have no clue how it works. These are just amazing.

Same here, ook. My best guess is that our brain assumes the height of the the top of the cookie-cutter type shape is consistent, but it's actually not, and that causes the perspective change when one side is rotated further from the viewer.
