Getting it balanced could well be impossible, but I wish an Overwatch v. TF2 game actually existed.

I have never seen a more accurate representation of sniper play for either of these games.

This isn't my scene and I didn't understand many of these characters at the beginning, but I did by the end. That's a good story.

I was playing Pharah in FFA with like six Widows and I cleaned up cause they were just scoped in all the time trying to headshot each other.

Would you go so far as to say you dunked them?

The Hanzo did nothing except punch a wall. That sounds about right.

This brings back fond memories of playing TF2 with MeFightClub (some background in this MeTa).

POTG is accurate. I would have also accepted the Engineer staring at a wall while his turret got a triple kill.

I'm a little disappointed that Torb and Engineer didn't have some turret bonding time.

Has Blizzard ever said how much they owe (conceptually) to Valve? There is almost a one-to-one correspondence between the players. Especially now that Sombra was brought in as sort of a half-assed Spy.

Similarly, for MeFiters, live action PUBG vs. Fortnite. (Has this not been an FPP? I bet this has been an FPP.)

Now I am missing TF2. Hearing the Administrator even gave me a little frissony endorphin rush, which tells me that no, I should not reinstall TF2.

...is TF2 really all men with only one black man?

Yes. The representation in Overwatch is so taken for granted it's easy to forget what passed for diversity when TF2 came out 11 years ago. As I recall at the time Valve was highly praised for the work that went into TF2's characters.

Possibly/probably two, though how much does it count if you never get to see their skin?

On preview, what Alvy Ampersand said.

I am especially missing TF2 with the old MeFi crowd. Oh, the rounds of Gun Game and the time we did the Heavy finger gun duels.... The Rotato sprays... [happy sigh]

I resemble that remark! (Well, no I don't. I was a pretty active Engineer. Also, a very active Torb.)

Yeah, should have been a romance option between Torb's turret and Engineer's turret. Isn't it time society will let automated killing machines express their love?

Huh? I thought spraying bullets WAS the way automated killing machines express love.

I can't believe they featured Pharah, using a voice line, and did not opt for "Rocket jump? That sounds dangerous."

I mean, it's not just the character classes, it's also that they literally ripped off the "introduce a character that doesn't really have an actual story during gameplay with a cute pre-rendered video story that gives said character some background."

Valve literally broke ground on that model with TF2. The "Meet The Team" shorts were a huge part of its initial success. (Also Expiration Date, which Valve pitched to Adult Swim as a pilot, is excellent. It also shows the strength of those old character designs and Valve's animation chops.)

Oh, and let's not forget that Valve was releasing comic books about TF2 long before Blizzard was releasing comic books about Overwatch as well.

They took literally every aspect of presentation of the product from Valve.

Saying it out loud would probably mean they owe Valve some fucking money.

God I wish we had gotten that TF2 show damn it.

I got a Torbjorn POTG and it is literally just me hammering away at my turret as fast as I can. It is entirely visually uninteresting to watch, and it could not be more Torbjorn.

All mine are usually me running around shooting people with my turret parked at a defensive chokepoint, relying on my ult to heal my turret.

I actually commented on this in a previous OW thread. It's a short breakdown of OW demographics.

So much representation in that comment, but you fail to mention something that I see as incredibly important in Overwatch's representation. Numerous people who are missing limbs and have robotic replacement body parts, which is something that is slowly but surely becoming more common in real life.

Junkrat straight up has a peg leg, and he is still one of the fastest moving characters in the game if you know how to use him. I love that.

As an aside, I only really remember Valve being praised for character design and a willingness to take a risk on a cartoony style in a violent game. I do not remember accolades being given to them about representation, so honestly the comparison seems a bit odd to me. However, at the same time, my memory is fuzzy, maybe they did get accolades for that.

I vaguely remember Valve getting some praise for the black character, the Demoman, being stereotypically Scottish rather than being a more conventional black stereotype.

Has Blizzard ever said how much they owe (conceptually) to Valve?

That's always been Blizzard's thing:
- Warcraft copied Dune II.
- Diablo copied UMoria.
- World of Warcraft copied Everquest.
- and now Overwatch copied Team Fortress II.

Some people (and, certainly, Blizzard themselves) would argue that what they do is more improving and refining, and I really don't think that can be denied, but it remains that they haven't really constructed a new kind of game since The Lost Vikings. (There is some hyperbole here. But not that much.)

Anyway, I miss TF2 as well, and think about it fairly often. Of course, the thing about TF2's classes is, none of them are women. At the time that was part of the joke, but yeah, in light of Overwatch it seems backward. Once Valve releases Team Fortress 3 (a date marked on their calendars for the month after Half-Life 3, which is due for release on the 17th of Neveruary), maybe they could remedy that.

At this point, it's almost comical how opposed to the number 3 Valve is.
Half-Life -> Half-life 2 -> Half-Life 2 Episode 1 -> Half-life 2 Episode 2
Portal -> Portal 2
Left 4 Dead -> Left 4 Dead 2
[REDACTED] -> Dota 2
[REDACTED] -> Team Fortress 2

Maybe we would have seen an end to the Half-life story if they thought of making a Half-Life 2 Episode 2 Part 2.
