Matt "Guitar" Murphy, passes away at the age of 88

Matt "Guitar" Murphy, one of the last links to the heyday of Blues Scene in the 40's and 50's Chicago, passes away.

NY Times Obit.

Rolling Stones Obit.

Pitchfork Obit.

Although he is best remembered for his turn in the Blues brothers movies and the accompanying Band; Matt Murphy was a mainstay of the Chicago Blues scene long before that. The obits have links to YouTube videos of Matt Murphy performing with Willie Dixon and Mempis Slim on his "Matt's Boogie", which gives you a flavor of why the Blues Brothers wanted him in the band in the first place.

RIP.

We are slowly losing our last links to the 40's and 50's Blues Scene of Chicago. I should go watch Buddy Guy any chance I get.

I seem to remember in the 1990s that he was one of those guys who was constantly doing bar gigs. Practically every month, you'd see a flyer for Mat "Guitar" Murphy as part of the local jazz/blues bar rotation.

I saw the Blues Brothers Band back in the day when they toured with guest vocalists... they were tight. Felt a bit of idiot at first because I rocked up in costume - black suit, hat, tie shades etc and when no one else did. But they let a few of us on stage to dance for a number and I got a cheer so didn't regret it then. What a night that was.

Wore out my tape of the BB when I was a kid. Had all the albums. Saw MGM twice, he burned that tiny little stage up like nobody's business and should have been bigger, but hey - he got a number with Aretha!

Rolling Stones Obit.

For a minute I thought Jagger & co had done an obit. It would have fitted.
