I honestly thought he died a few years ago. I guess when the movie came out.

CBC Radio One's As It Happens played (full episode .mp3) a portion of a 1975 interview with him about the Professional School for Panhandlers, and also aired a touching retrospective interview with his daughter Jenny Abel.

I don't know if anybody had faked their death on that level, but he was one of the first. But the paper of record making a mistake, that was more of a big deal. The New York Times doesn't like to be fooled. That's why we were so surprised they wrote such a nice obituary with my dad passing in actuality last week.
