Years ago I steered away from any octopus on the menu. You know, because they MIGHT just be smarter than me...

And this re-confirms my decision.

My mother has decided, at age 80, that the octopus is her spirit animal. She won’t even eat in a restaurant that serves them anymore.
Go mom!

I am utterly delighted by this and I only hope they didn't disturb the octopuslets

Yeah, seriously, can't we just leave them be? Humans are like the creepiest neighbors on the planet, always watching, planting cameras, peering into homes...

No wonder he's suspicious...

Ever noticed how galaxies aren't shaped like upright bipeds?
Ever notice what they actually look like?
Ever think that the god that doesn't exist but is always with you might enjoy making galaxies in their likeness?

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's kindergarten in the shade
She'd let us in, knows where we've been
In her octopus's kindergarten in the shade

I am embarassingly proud that I happened to watch the Nautilus live stream when they discovered this.

For anyone who's missed their stream: live stream every deep sea rover dive they do, 24/7, wether it's exploring underwater national parks, testing a new soft robot gripper for NASA, exploring Hawaaian sea mounts or anything else. And with live commentary from the scientists to boot. It's like the most calming and interesting reality TV ever.

The octopus has three hearts, it lives in caves below the sea
Or in a beer can or a bath tub or a puddle on the street
Any fisherman can tell you when an octopus waves its arms
It hypnotizes schools of fish, all movement stops for miles
Even the waves stand still, all the witnesses have sworn
And it’s impossible to resist the urge to jump overboard

These types of news stories really just upset me. Scientists discovering some cool new thing or place is just a precursor to capitalists finding some way to exploit, damage, or destroy whatever that thing was.

This made me happy/sad. Happy that all these octopuses have found a safe place to coddle their eggs/young. Sad, because the female octopus dies after her young leave the 'nest'. She doesn't feed while brooding, and just wastes away caring for them.
