catatsu (kyatastu) actually means stepladder in Japanese. Which are also good for attracting cats.

My large feline son INSISTS on being on or near my body at all times during this cold snap, especially since my husband is away for the week. This would be great but I am so so pregnant right now and he is so so large and heavy and in love with lying DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THE BABY and neither of us can find a comfortable way to lie down, so our nights are spent irritably jockeying for position under the covers. It's like a much less cute version of this video.

Huh, that kotatsu is certainly something. I've never heard of it before. I'm tempted to knock one together and see what the fuss is about. I'm fairly certain both the cat and the dog would move in there immediately, though.

The first winter we had both a kitty and a kotatsu, I got to turn it on for the first time and see the kitty figure out what it did. He poked his snout in and was like “!!!” and immediately followed snout with rest of body.

I've run the numbers on ordering a kotatsu and having it shipped to me here in the US, but I just can't justify the expense, especially since I'd use it here maybe twice a year. But it looks so cozy and warm and those cats are the most precious thing.

PearlRose, it depends on whether or not you're willing to use Amazon, but we got our kotatsu and table futon there and LOVE IT. I think we also got a voltage converter to go with. We use it as our coffee table, minus the futon, year round, and then as soon as the air gets crisp the futon goes on and the heater gets plugged in, and I have basically been spending all my non-work hours under it this week.
