Four (plus Four) for Friday: the trio of decade and genre-focused "Ongaku" (音楽, music) compilations from the dubious French label, Hiruko Records: Ongaku 70 (YouTube playlist; Discogs), subtitled "Vintage Psychedelia in Japan" / Ongaku 80 (YT album; Discogs), subtitled "Alternative Waves from Japan" / Ongaku 90 (Discogs with some YouTube clips embedded), subtitled "Underground Music from Japan," (Discogs lists styles as New Wave, electro, experimental, and ambient) // If you want more experimental, ambient music from this period, Light in the Attic recently released Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990, and a YouTuber made a playlist of some of the clips that are already online.
Plus Four:
Plus Four:
- 音楽 Ongaku #1 (Japanese Funk/Jazz/City Pop/Boogie/Soul/Disco)
- 音楽 Ongaku #2 (Japanese Jazz/City Pop/Boogie/Soul/Funk/Disco)
- 音楽 Ongaku #3 (Japanese Funk/Jazz/New Wave/Synth Pop/City Pop/Boogie/Soul/Disco)
- 音楽 Ongaku #4 (Japanese City Pop/Funk/Synth Pop/Disco/Boogie/Soul/Jazz)
I've been extremely excited for the Light in the Attic compilation. And didn't know about any of the other links. Thanks!

I just noticed that I had this MeFi post open next to the bandcamp page of the Light in the Attic compilation by sheer coincidence. (Randomly clicking music related things that I wanted to return later.)
The compilation is great and I was just about to look for more music in the same vein... so thanks a lot, filthy light thief! :)

So tempted to get the Kankyo Ongaku vinyl! There are exclusive non-digital tracks, and I’m a sucker for that. Been really eating up Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Soundscape 1: Surround and Green for the past few days.

The Bandcamp edition of Kankyō Ongaku, though it's only 10 tracks, compared to the 23 tracks from the 2xCD set, or 25 for 3xLP.

I believe at the time of posting the FPP, the Kankyō Ongaku Light in the Attic compilation wasn't up on Spotify yet, but it is now, happy listening. It's a fantastic, fantastic album and it's going to be in heavy rotation for me this year.

Oops, it's only 10 of the 25 tracks, just like Bandcamp. I got excited. Totally worth buying the album, though.
