PREDICTION: Everything will be ported to the Switch

What to expect from E3 2019 [The Verge] “For fans looking to hear about the future of games, E3 has always been an exciting week. This year, though, there’s a big cloud hanging over the show. Two of the biggest names in the industry aren’t holding their usual press conferences; mega publisher Electronic Arts will instead be live streaming news and announcements over the course of a weekend; and Sony isn’t just forgoing a keynote, it’s skipping E3 altogether. [...] It has left some to ponder — and not for the first time — whether E3 is even relevant any more. Should you still be excited?”

• The story of the first E3: How the 1995 inaugural happened, and how it almost didn’t [Polygon]
“It was a pivotal moment in gaming history, set between an era dominated by the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis and the world of the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. New games, new technologies, and new ideas were everywhere. It was also an era of experimentation: of the 32X, 3D0, Neo-Geo CD, Virtual Boy, and Atari Jaguar. Like all E3s, it was a show about the games that would define the year ahead. Visitors were treated to the likes of Chrono Trigger, Descent, Donkey Kong Land, Earthbound, Killer Instinct, Panzer Dragoon, Rayman, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Vectorman, Virtua Fighter, and Wing Commander 3. The games industry attracted celebrities too. Michael Jackson was at the Sony party. Seal sang at the Nintendo party. Steven Spielberg and Sylvester Stallone showed up.”
• The E3 2019 Press Conference Schedule [Kotaku]
“It is nearly time for E3, the annual convention where companies from around the world unite to show trailers for video games that don’t actually exist yet. Are you ready? I’m ready. The show runs from June 11 through June 13, but the fun starts well before then. Beginning on Sunday, June 9, some of the biggest video game publishers will hold press conferences to announce news, show videos, and demonstrate how hip they are by dabbing on stage. Two big companies are skipping their traditional press conferences this year: EA and Sony. Everyone else is back for another year of Video Game Christmas. Here’s the schedule (which we’ll update in the days leading up to E3 if anything changes or we learn more).”
• What to expect at E3 2019 [Engadget]
“With Sony sitting this round out, the other two members of gaming's Big 3 -- Nintendo and Microsoft -- are likely to enjoy a lion's share of the public's attention this year. Nintendo will hold its Direct event on Tuesday morning. We're not expecting news on Super Mario Maker 2 or Pokemon Sword and Shield, as both titles will have had their own Direct events prior to the start of the show, but we are hoping for word on the new Fire Emblem game, Animal Crossing, the Link's Awakening reboot, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Town. Any news on Bayonetta 3 or Super Metroid 4 would be welcome as well. For its part, Microsoft is likely to spill the beans on Gears 5, which is slated for release later this year. We're also hoping for news on the company's flagship FPS franchise with Halo Infinite. Surprisingly, there's a strong chance that we might not see a new Forza in 2019, breaking a nearly-decade long streak. But could we see a proper reveal of xCloud, Microsoft's answer to Google's Stadia game streaming service, instead?”
• E3 2019 predictions: what we expect from the big show [PC Gamer]
“We're edging close to E3, and we already know quite a bit about what will be there. We're getting new looks at Cyberpunk 2077 and Jedi: Fallen Order, our first look at the Avengers game, probably a bunch of announcements at Microsoft's press conference—as well as a bit of Halo Infinite, surely—and a couple of surprises from Ubisoft along with more about Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. E3 is also a carnival of surprises, though, and every year we do our best to guess at what the major publishers have in their back pockets. Based on the rumors we've heard and our own wild speculation, here's what we think might happen this year.”
• Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XVI
• AMD jumps on the ray tracing bandwagon
• Bethesda announces The Elder Scrolls 6 again
• Lots of ludicrous teasers for games that aren't coming out for years
• 2016-2017 influences show up in full
• THQ Nordic announces 80 games in rapid-fire succession
• Microsoft brings Xbox emulation to PC
• I’m gonna have to go to the bathroom right when the FromSoftware game trailer begins

If they bundle Wii Sports and Sports Resort and Portal 1 and 2 together (i.e. two bundles), I'be be ecstatic.

If they provide a bundle for the Switch with Portal 1, Portal 2 and either Portal 0 or 3, well, not sure how to describe my joy.

At the start of the year, I'd have told you there are exactly two AAA franchises I'm still interested in, both because they're exactly the kind of over-the-top stupid I enjoy: Darksiders and Borderlands. Upon review of the past six months I would prefer less stupid from both of those franchises, please.

I will be honest: I am mostly excited for this E3 because my wife will be there giving a ton of interviews. When she last attended in 2011 it was as “fetcher of sandwiches”, and now she’s repping one of the AAA marquee titles as a dev-side producer. I’ve always been proud of her but this year marks a huge and much-deserved milestone, by any standard.

For myself, I’m mostly just hoping for a tentative release date on Cyberpunk 2077. I’m still not entirely convinced the game they’ve shown is possible, but if it actually exists as described then it’s going to make Skyrim look like small beer.

Dragon's Dogma 2 would be great, but I know that's not going to happen. A bit of a teaser from Guerrilla for the next HZD would be nice (though that'll be Sony so not at E3).

I just kicked off up Dishonoured: Death of the Outsider last night having bought it last autumn... I've been rationing myself. So so happy to play as a queer woman of colour. I was hoping that would be the case and I'm thrtilled. Arkane makes no bones about it.

But I don't know what I'll play once I'm done. Before I finally started, I'd resorted to just flying randomly in No Man's Sky and that is getting pretty tired.

Borderlands Handsom Collection is free on PS+ this month so I may take a swing at that, but having watched a playthrough already I'm not sure it won't just annoy me with it's caustic arrogance even though you can play as a woman character. And, of course, the endgame reveals are super disturbing.

Divinity 2 might be a thing but I really don't like turn-based stuff, man I dunno. It's such a frigging dry spell right now. Sigh.

Here’s my pony request: Terrariatris for the Switch.

Not "puyo" not "battle royale" - JUST GIVE ME TETRIS.
Look - I love Lumines and am glad it came over.
But just give me a good quality Tetris.

I love my switch but there are just too many games on my backlog on PC let alone switch. I'm focused on beating Witcher 3 now.

Christ Cyberpunk is gonna be insane... But I still have so many things to beat before I even think of buying that.

/r/games sure has a lot of Todd Howard hate. It's interesting to see the mass hating of Epic & Bethesda. Two companies I used to respect a lot, but I def feel their annoyance (if not their anger - why be angry about that, there's literal nazis in the streets to be worried about).

Honestly though I get really tired of the hype of multiplayer games. Especially when it's just competition for whatever streaming flavor of the month someone can be. I guess I'm more a solo gamer at heart, so I look forward to more from Ninty & Indie games than the big shooters and arenawhoozies.

Mostly I'm checked out of the "race".

Read the article to find:

what we’ve heard about Overwatch 2 (or whatever it winds up being called) is that it’ll have a large PVE element. (A couple of Blizzard people have compared it to Left 4 Dead.)

So it isn't a replacement for OW, it's more like a massive pve dlc.

Todd Howard has stated pretty clearly in pre-E3 interviews (because LOL that's a thing now) that they won't be showing much if anything about Starfield or TES6 this year, which is to say they're going back to their usual policy of only showing stuff that will be releasing in the same year.

I'm pretty sure the only reason we got those teasers for Starfield and TES6 last year is that they knew Fallout 76 would be really controversial (like ESO was before it) so they wanted to send a clear message that they're not abandoning single-player games to become a GaaS studio.

The PS5 will be just as capable of reverse compatibility as the next Xbox (which is completely unsurprising given that the PS4/PS5/XB1/Next Xbox are all basically very custom PCs running an x86-64 architecture under the hood.) Also, as a long-time FFXIV player, I have to always laugh at the talk about Microsoft being "open" to crossplay - for those who don't know, the reason that there is no XB1 FFXIV client is because Microsoft refused to allow full crossplay between platforms, which was a dealbreaker for SE, and a similar demand is why The Elder Scrolls Online is platform segregated.

Count me in so far on From's Elden Ring. Miyazaki's been pretty good so far, Sekiro aside, about permitting diverse representation in games and I don't see any reason why this one wouldn't. It's nice it'll sbe out for PS4. Probably next year tho.

Arkane's Death Loop is intriguing with its black protagonists, though I reflexively want to push back about the woman fighting for the status quo and the man for change (which feels very awkward given current events), but not knowing why there's a time loop makes that feeling rather tentative. If the game lets you choose and stick to a side on start, and thus has at least two different playthroughs (kinda like Nier) that would be cool, and cooler if there's more variations afterwards. I can totally see Arkane doing that. On the other hand if you have to flip back and forth I'll be more tepid about it.

Cyberpunk 2077's claimed avatar customizability given me some hope, though CD Projekt Red has been pretty shit about its treatment of women in games. If it's just going to be Geralt in optional drag with the same hot garbage patriarchal bullshit but instead of trees and dirt it's neon and glitter, hard pass.

Keen to see if/what Sony will reveal this summer. Keen especially on The Last of Us sequel (it's a bit of a shock to remember that TLOU was a 2013 PS3 title, the PS4 is a remaster, so that's six years). Also, what the hell is going on with Dragon Age, damn it. I have no hope that Square Enix will stop releasing Bro Quests, and it's so disappointing. But then they also released Nier: Automata which was amazing. So I dunno. And then there's the hazy promise of Beyond Good and Evil 2....

A promising start, I guess? With some hope for diversity and representation?

Yeah, I'm withholding that judgment until we hear more about what the story's like. It definitely looks like a game that's built around unfolding a mystery via multiple playthroughs, from the brief story trailer we saw.

Definitely intrigued by both that one and Ghostwire from the E3 presentation. As well as, like, Doom Eternal looks pretty good, especially if it involves the Doom Slayer fighting angels because -- *Doom Slayer throws my keyboard across the room because he's bored with my speculation and wants to get back to killing demons*

I'm officially annoyed at the gaming "press" being awestruck by Scarlett being reverse compatible. Three of the four Xbox platforms are running on the same damn architecture (which also happens to be the architecture in your PC or Mac.) I would have found it to NOT be reverse compatible to be the more surprising takeaway, given that.

If anybody’s wondering why people online are freaking out over the FFVIII remaster (and why it’s going to cost more than the $15 you can buy every other “classic” game in the series for), it’s the one Final Fantasy that never gets ported to other platforms – supposedly Square lost the original PS1 source code and assets, making it much more difficult to do anything other than re-release the exact same discs from 1999. Looks like they finally decided to spend the money it takes to deal with that.

(this is also commentary on overall simplicity of most of the puzzles in BotW and how I hope there is more depth in that department in this sequel)

Last time they used "if we have Princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?" as an excuse to avoid having Zelda as a playable character. The trailer shows Link falling so I hope the answer to their question in BOTW 2 is "Get saved by Zelda, of course."

Wild, completely premature guess: Link and Zelda are afflicted by some kind of joint curse that traps one of them at a time in a spirit form, and you have to trade off which one has physical substance in order to solve puzzles.

I've actually heard that Animal Crossing's delay is related in part to Nintendo's refusal to engage in Crunch®, which, if true, is certainly encouraging.

E3 thoughts:
I'm still not thoroughly convinced by Cyberpunk, but I'm extending benefit of the doubt after TW3.

Square had a good showing although it trades heavily on nostalgia. I'm there for Trials of Mana and the FFVIII remake (though I wouldn't have minded some AI magic on the prerendered backgrounds). Official release of Seiken Densetsu 3 is good, 16-bit Dragon Quest 11 is excellent and FFVII is looking quite better than previously although I'm not down with the battle system.

Nintendo was the highlight for me. The Link's Awakening remake is right up my alley, same for the Crypt of the Necromancer/ Cadence of Hyrule crossover and a darker Breath of the Wild sequel in 1-2 years would be great. Also Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem and likely Astral Chain / Daemon X Machina should make for some good times.

Portable Witcher 3 and Ni No Kuni are also welcome.

My only complaint is that there is still no Spelunky port for the Switch.

Previously on Metafilter In 2016 I posted to the Blue asking "RIP E3?"

The General consensus then seemed to be that yes, E3 as it was originally conceived is a dead thing (communicating with large scale vendors such as Wallmart that this gaming thing exists and it needs retail space), but it's .. adapting?

It still gains a bazillion eyeballs for the large keynotes, and with games-as-prouducts rapidly morphing into games-as-a-service for so many consumers (resistance is futile at this point) E3 doesn't look like it's going away entirely.

This year Sony stated they wouldn't be appearing at their own dedicated E3 show/keynote, yet Sony games were announced aplenty, mostly to be released in 2020 - right about when the new PlayStation 5 (or whatever it gets eventually called) will probably be released.

Who knows maybe in a few years E3 will be an entirely digital / streaming / VR / event, but I don't think it will stop happening entirely for a while.

Also I am here for the FF VIII remake (I missed the original entirely), and also ALL THE NEW ANIMAL CROSSING PLEASE TO BE PUTTING IT IN MY FACE ASAP!!

I am now going to start saving for up for a Switch console. I only stared playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf on my 3DS last week. It's eating my life . . . in a good way?
