I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, but I know why.

Beardman, that reminds me of the cardboard cutout of Bob Vila I used to have in my mudroom in hopes that it would look like there was a man in the house if somebody peeked in.

Speaking of ersatz cats, for many years the brand Blue Q made a Flat Cat; it was a black-and-white cardboard cat standee with the eyes colorized in green, about 80% of life size. When my parents split up in the late 80s and our family cat stayed with my dad because said kitty was too old and infirm to be moved, we got one at my mom's house. We had Flat Cat for about a year there before we got a non-flat cat; our new kitty was smart enough to notice the resemblance right off and Flat Cat was the recipient of many vicious pawwhackings before we got the message and hid it away. FC is still around my house somewhere.
