2019 Association of Food Journalists award-winning coverage. Best Food Travel story: Gustavo Arellano at Eater, βThe Central Valley Is the Heart and Soul of Californiaβ; Best Newspaper Food Feature: Chris Malloy, Phoenix New Times, βA Journey to the Heart of New Arizonan Cuisineβ.
Started in 1986, AFJβs awards competition is the oldest contest for food journalists and recognizes excellence in 15 categories of food journalism including audio journalism, photography, and restaurant criticism. Check out their Awards archive.
Other πΆπΆπΆ standouts (for me): 2nd place in Special Food Project: Danielle Renwick, The New Food Economy, βThe Hands That Feed Us: Immigrant food workers, in their own wordsβ; 3rd place in Newspaper Food Feature: Mark Vamos, The Dallas Morning News, "Viet-Cajun restaurants boil up as D-FWβs hottest melting pot trend"; 3rd place for Food Policy: Liza Gross, Reveal, βScientists warned this weedkiller would destroy crops. EPA approved it anywayβ; 3rd place for Student writing on food: Forest Wilson and Rachel Lorenz, The Colorado Independent, "In time of plenty, students on Colorado campuses are hungry".

And now I am so hungry. I miss Central Valley food: I always felt like they had the perfect mixture of light food for hot weather made from freshly prepared ingredients a la the coastal areas of CA and rich tastes and sauces a la New Mexico and Arizona. A good mix of the fish/chicken/tomatoes style and a little of the beef/ beans/ rice. I also miss the insanely cheap prices and the weird soda varieties and the sopes and the arguing over who's favorite place is best.

Now I want to go to Central Valley. Great post, it'll take a few days to get through.
