Still not over losing Neil. Got pretty dusty for me on the last frame. Over the last 40 years, I think I've seen Rush literally scores of times. We would see them in one city, then drive to another city to see them again. Some of my best memories are the three of us, me and my two best friends, road tripping to see Rush. Top down on my car, v8 growling down the back roads, glass bottles of coke held against foreheads like southern armor against the heat as we unironically sang The Spirit of Radio from a cassette tape as we traveled through radio free Texas.

Notice that one character is driving a red Barchetta?

Love it.
Geddy Lee said once that Permanent Waves was that album that was "... a joy to make."
I think the music clearly shows that.

Neil driving the Barchetta made me smile. The empty kit at the end broke me.

This song causes a Pavlovian response in me to air drum every time I hear it. My work desk/dining room table just took a beating.
Also, what is the meaning of the hand movement (open/close)? Or is there a meaning to it?
Great post - thanks for making my morning move!

I was guessing that it was a "sing along here" signal to the crowd, but in the live versions I looked at, Geddy is clapping his hands over his head there, not making puppet mouth things with his hands.

Down a bit of a rabbit hole now, I see that Fantoons did the animation and they did a sequence "The Early Days of Neil Peart" for a documentary from 2016 that I had never heard of, about Rush's last tour (Time Stand Still).
Also, Neil was involved in a short film Growth Rings.

A few years ago, I was working on a short play that used Rush clips for a score, and ended up getting interested in their music. A friend made me a Rush playlist that I've enjoyed a lot. But I think this video helped me appreciate "The Spirit of Radio" more than I ever have before.
What a lovely video -- in the crowd/concert scenes, I was reminded of the end credits sequence for Into The Spider-Verse, and I thought all the glimpses of people listening to the radio were wonderful. And today I learned about Donna Halper!

I believe it; the bass lines for this song and "Freewill" are an absolute gas to play! Keeping it as tight as possible to Neil's drumming is a challenge.

Absolutely perfect. The video this song deserves.

My kids went to play at Lee Lifeson Park yesterday. I was thinking to play them some Rush so at least they'd know who the park was named for. The Spirit of Radio seems like a good place to start.

Start with "The Necromancer":
As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky,
The three travelers, men of Willowdale,
Emerge from the forest shadow...

They peaked with 'Caress of Steel'. Everything after is a coda.

Not nearly enough Alex Lifeson in that video. They kept cutting to other things during his bits.

Never thought I'd see a fresh video to a song of this era! I always like imagining a pitch meeting for this song. "So, I'm thinking that about 3/4 of the way through the song, we'll switch to a measure or two of cod reggae and paraphrase Simon and Garfunkel. [awkward silence] Right, I'll show myself out..."

I still think a starting point for beginners is either Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures. The big singles are there. If one develops an affection for the longer pieces then you can work your way back into the catalog all the way to the debut. If you like the shorter songs, then move onto Signals towards Clockwork Angels (which is more than we could hope for in terms of a final statement).

OMG, hippybear, don't tell my boss that I just spent almost two hours watching that video. I didn't mean to, but I just couldn't turn it off.
My heart.
