🎶 Shut the Fuck Up and Put On Your Mask 🎵 (which is dang catchy) vs. ...
Empathy has its own kind of power. Acknowledging what people dislike about a public-health strategy enables a connection with them rather than alienating them further. And when the barriers are understood, they become addressable. When it became clear that people needed better condoms, companies began making them in all different shapes, sizes, and styles—ribbed, studded, impossibly thin, even glow-in-the-dark—to improve comfort, sensation, and people’s sense of individuality. Likewise, the government needs to support businesses in developing masks that are not only effective, but also fit well and feel good. People need a range of options, including face shields, that can help meet their personal needs and preferences. And people need face coverings that make them feel stylish, cool, and—yes—even manly. Frankly, no one needs to explain masking any more than explaining soap. Public health experts all over the world now recommend masks, many experienced people have been masking for decades now, so just do it.

If like a child, you must ask why, here’s the simplest explanation.

Don’t piss on my leg.

Why Won’t White People Wear Masks?

I think we're past the stage of trying to understand why people won't do the thing that's going to save their lives and others. The time to have that dialogue was months ago and nearly every other country is able to figure out this one simple trick that saves lives. Now people just gotta do it or people just gonna die.

I can think of nothing more likely to get through to those who feel emasculated than strapping a jock to your face and calling it a tactical mask.

This is great.

Little mule runs a restaurant in a nameless city centered in a nameless state that lies just above Raton Pass. His place claims to serve fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Lately they've graduated from take-out only, to limited indoor, to a limited patio and indoor dining: the staff all wear masks. They Wear Masks. And so do the patrons, until they are seated, spaced appropriately throughout the premises.

Little mule tells me he's been flipped off, cussed out, and had his parentage called into question by insisting that patrons keep their masks on until they've been seated. He told me on the phone the other day that he actually told one would-be patron who was whining about his civil rights to "Shut the fuck up and put on your mask or go eat somewhere else." He got a round of polite applause from the patrons seated nearby.

I just sent him that link.

But telling someone they are an idiot is not effective for getting them to adopt a necessary habit

I live in Minneapolis, and am up in northeastern Minnesota this week. Yesterday, I stopped in the local ON/OFF liquor store, and a guy walked out with a case of beer as me and my daughter were putting our masks on to head in.

He commented (good-naturedly, but sincerely), "Don't need a mask up here in the fresh air" and followed up with a somewhat more pointed accusation: "Chicken!"

I laughed it off, but have been very frustrated every time I've thought of this exchange since. This happened in a very small town, in an area thronged with tourists in the summer, and my daughter and I were clearly from "The Cities" or somewhere similar. There's also been a fair amount of commentary this summer along the lines that while the area needs tourism dollars, they'd just as soon not have so many outsiders visiting. Yet here I am wearing a mask to help ensure I don't spread anything I might be carrying and this guy assumes I'm doing it for my own benefit.

Now that masks have been completely politicized, there's no appeal to anything that's going to change someone's mind.

What’s left to do?

Well, the REAL work to be done is to figure out how to work with the individual to inspire a level of empathy within him that will lead him to see that masking is something that benefits everyone, because he sees how it cares for others.

The REAL REAL work to be done is to spend decades working actively to deflate the selflshness endemic in our culture so doing that previous paragraph's work is less work.

I don't know how to get people to wear masks during this pandemic. Everything I'm talking about takes serious time and work.

I will say, here in Eastern WA, I've seen more mask wearing across the past 2 weeks, and probably more mask wearing today than I'd seen even yesterday. So people around here are being respectful. I appreciate that.

Idaho is turning into the next massive COVID-19 hotspot. I think it's getting a little closer to home for some people.

It's getting a LOT close to home, to be honest. I'm just glad the people where I live are stepping up and taking measures and not being generally assholes. It's not unexpected (this is a nice area to live, and people are nice), but it's refreshing too.

Well, we could look at how we talk about other times when we want people to put something on for everyone's safety.

This is a war of culture, and it's kind of a long game. Generally speaking, if you're on the side that can point and laugh at the other side for being ridiculous, then you're on the winning side.

More of this, please.

But it's awfully effective in getting a mask scofflaw to leave the restaurant they're insisting on coming into without one. Which is sometimes the only good outcome available.

I thought this was going to be the Hamilton Mask Up song given this site's love of the musical. I thought this was a nice take as he does try to listen to the "other side" and empathise, but stays firm on why he wears a mask and thinks everyone else should too.

I liked this! This is a good post and you should feel good. And wear a mask, but I guess you're already doing that. Rock on!

Last night we went to a local gas station. They had signs mandating masks. All of the staff were masked.

About 1/2 of customers were masked.

Since people who are choosing not to wear masks are openly pointing and laughing at mask-wearers for being 'scared', 'sheeple', and, yes, 'ridiculous', I'm not sure what you think you're saying here.

Here's Texas for a week, including today which has 5 more hours to go (and I think six in the far west of the state):

06/25 - 5996
06/26 - 5707
06/27 - 5742
06/28 - 5357
06/29 - 4288
06/30 - 6975
07/01 - 8076
07/02 - 7915 (day is roughly 75% over at time of writing. I assume, on top of that, many hospitals/clinics will not be able to share their information at immediately at 0001 hours.)

source: dshs.texas.gov Choose the case trends tab.

Anecdotally, it seems like the last 4 or 5 days, more people have been masking up by a noticeable amount.

It's also been enough of almost record cases each new day for our very red governor to issue a mandatory mask order starting tomorrow (CNBC). This is less than 24 hours after the Lt. Gov said: "The only thing I’m skipping over is listening to [Faucci's advice on anything CoVid related]" (Texas Tribune).

(and for those who forgot, Patrick is the same one who suggested elderly would be happy to die (nbcnews.org) in order for America to open back up for their grandchildren.)

******

All that to say, IT IS hitting a lot closer to home for a lot of people*. I am cautiously optimistic it will change people's behavior at the individual level (we'll see what this weekend brings) as well as at the state level (what other states go to mandatory masking?)

Apologies for the US-Centric comment. As the EU is essentially quarantining the US, I thought it made sense to focus on the place with the worst behavior to see, if we have any chance of ending this soon, without us (the US) pulling our collective heads out of our asses.

Oof. Sorry. Didn't mention I am looking forward to listening to the song but it has to wait because my PC is... well, PC is retiring Saturday. There were a couple of paragraphs in the Atlantic article I wanted to touch on as well, but I'll leave that for later. I'll sit back and listen for a while.

Our department of ~20 has all been tested at least once, as all of us are in and out of clinics/hospitals daily. We're all expecting to get tested again within the next three weeks, as a courtesy to each other as well as those we support. So far, we have only had one positive. That positive was someone who did not mask at a social gathering. Fortunately, they don't often go into patient areas, as it's... below their paygrade, shall we say.

That's not laughing from a sense of humor, that's laughing as cruelty. That's laughing to cover up fear. Not remotely the same thing.

The science about masks is not conclusive (as this peer-reviewed study shows):

"...there is a lack of substantial evidence to support claims that facemasks protect either patient or surgeon from infectious contamination."

The idea has never been that masks make someone immune from infection or infecting others. The idea has ALWAYS been that it's a simple and effective way to reduce infection or infecting others. Anything we can do to reduce the infection rate, whether it's social distancing or wearing masks or whatever... it all adds up across society to make it better for everyone.

There will be no "THIS IS THE THING THAT KEEPS IT FROM SPREADING" until we have a vaccine that truly works. Until then, all we can do, all we can hope to do, all we can be asked to do by society... is to take steps to minimize its spread.

So wear a damn mask.

It's a layered "defense in depth". Staying the fuck at home, away from other people PLUS keeping 6' personal space when you can't PLUS wearing a mask when you can't maintain space -- all reduce the risk.
