Guardian cartoonist David Squires pays tribute to England World Cup winner and Republic of Ireland hero Jack Charlton (May 8, 1935 - July 10, 2020).
“The [...] Pope would have saved that.”

There have been some lovely articles in the Irish media since the weekend celebrating both his life, and the impact of the "Charlton Years" on Ireland as a country. The Irish Independent interviewed Eamon Dunphy (his "arch-nemesis") whereas Mary Hannigan in the Irish Times has a round-up of some of the tributes from the weekend - the proper Irish wake as she puts it.
But basically everyone has their own story either about Big Jack, or the Charlton years - there are a lot more articles with anecdotes and memories. (I've also linked before to the Reeling in the Years snippet featuring Italia '90, which is one of the best I've seen at somehow capturing some of the atmosphere at the time.)

Ireland really captured the imagination at Euro 1988. I remember being on the football field at school, I would’ve been seven at the time, with a bunch of kids trying to reenact Ronnie Whelan’s goal against the USSR. This being before the time of constant replays on television, let alone YouTube, the distance of the shot grew in every retelling until we were trying to score from the half way line. Because of that tournament I picked up a book at the library about the history of the World Cup, and learned about the Charlton brothers.
What an absurdly successful career he had, and seemingly was a decent human being off the field too. Jack seems to be almost the epitome of a life well lived.

A great and very decent man, by all accounts (not by any means the same thing). Jack Charlton#s every move was followed in the Irish press during Italia 90 and there was the constant stream of topical t-shirts on sale in the streets (sometimes 2-3 a day). I used to have one with a picture of him standing next to the Pope with the caption "Who's that with wor Jackie?"
