Americans Who Tell the Truth: A Portrait Series

An excerpt from Robert Shetterly's Portraits of Earth Justice Robert Shetterly began painting the Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits over twenty years ago as an act of defiance and love; defiance against the culture of lies promoting the war against Iraq, and love for the people who throughout our history have had the courage to tell truth to unjust power while demanding that our ideals be mirrored in our actions.

I find it so easy to get hung on "what is wrong" with the US and not see the good, much less the great. I've been trying to notice when I'm getting all frowny and gaseous and finger-wavey (a lot of the time) and trying to balance by noticing what is good here, and what is great. This seems to me to be a good project of great US citizens, honest US citizens.

I'm saddened but not surprised that there aren't more comments on this post. We're all so conditioned to prefer controversy to quiet deep truth. Thank you for sharing.

Fine portraits of fine people. Glad to see Bill McKibben right away.

It's a sad comment on something or other that I'm finding it hard to think of people I'd like to see added to that lineup. Paul Krugman? Rick Pearlstein? Radley Balko? I kind of have the sense that the artist would not be too interested in them. But they're people who've been out there calling things by their right names.

This is great. I love the artist's style and weirdly, the way the brushstrokes in the background halo around the heads.
