Growing up in the Bay Area, I was definitely a fan of his work--it is very recognizable. When I was working at BART, the Customer Services office had a huge, framed version of his BART telephone/poster linked in the post. The hours are different, but the phone numbers all still work (you have to add the new area codes for the East Bay, etc.).

As someone who lived in the bay area for a decade, I love finding out about local history and figures like this. Thanks for posting.

My workplace commissioned one of his better-known works. I have looked at it almost every day for nearly twenty years, and I still find new things to appreciate about it all the time. He was a very gifted person and I am so glad he shared those gifts with the world.

I lived near his shop for a while and it was a joy to walk by and look in on errands. Always lovely.

Sad to hear. My print of his is #26 Bach, which I tracked down after seeing it on Edward Appleby’s bedroom wall in Rushmore (the scene where Max fakes being hit by a car to get into the house).

Oh wow, love the last poster, for MSRI. I attended a workshop or three there during my grad school days...

I have been truly moved by everything that I have seen and read of David Lance Goines (including in this book). A true artisan. If someone could ungate his San Francisco Chronicle obit, I would like to read it.

A professor at my college had poster #2 on her office wall. Many years later I found a copy of the poster to hang next to my desk. I look at it and think about the message in the ouster, the time I spent with that teacher, and where I am now.

Thank you, chavenet. The SF Chronicle obituary provided a more localized and personal perspective on Goines than the Times one did. I'm glad that I was able to read each of them.

I grew up in Berkeley and love DLG's work. I grew up with the Bach print linked above on the wall at home and I've got two now – 34 (for what event this poster was designed … I have no idea), and 34, from the contractor that my folks used when remodeling their house. I've also got his Berkeley VD Clinic poster rolled up in a tube somewhere from when I was a poster-obsessed designer college kid.
His Berkeley Public Library poster is iconic and a lovely memory from childhood. I'd love to have one some day. One thing I love about his work, as a local, is that it chimes so well with the built environment, and I guess some piece of the experience of being in the area. I don't know; maybe it's just because I grew up with his work around and I have heavy nostalgia for the unremembered 70s … but it all kind of fits. His work is a core part of the je ne sais for me, I guess.
Berkeley's municipal style draws a lot from Goine's style, in fact, or it did when I was still living there.
Going through these again I'm reminded of how much great detail there is on these pages, sometimes, along with tangential anecdotes and a fair amount of Christian writing, too, which I'd forgotten.
