Cool. Now do death-whatever subgenres!

I only scored 22603 and got half of them wrong. But why wasn't there a playlist at the end, so you could go back and listen? I like dance music! I'm unable to parse out different genres, but I like it! Give me lists!

42017! I recognized a bunch of the older tracks, but had trouble with some of the newer genres. Not sure about Joey Beltram being industrial techno, though.

A fun way to start a Friday and not bad for an old man 😃

Things I wish I had known before I started:
  • It's timed.
  • You get more points for guessing earlier.

I scored over 50k before deciding to return to my day's work.

@Otherwise, I got around the newer genres problem by process of elimination.

Has to be said, I don't think in recent years dance music has had the mania for subgenres that used to exist.

I can only think of outsider house and fast techno as particular recent examples.

At the same time we've seen a lot of the dubstep subgenres just become bass music.

...also there's no way that Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass is Acid House. There's no TB-303 on it.

TIL that no matter how much trip hop and house music I listen to I have no idea what darkstep or neurofunk is.

I strongly disagree as to what these people consider glitch hop. Good day, sir.

I got enough of these wrong in a row that I was starting to wonder if it was a prank but then I realized that I'm old and out of touch so I'm going back to the U2 thread.

(Somewhat more seriously: there really is a lot of great music in here - there is a lot of great music basically everywhere now - but it's all got fractally granular genre names and I just don't know what any of it's called.)

23,791.

I got maybe half of them right (with a lot of guessing), recognized a song or two, might enjoy an explainer about abstract breaks/illbient.

Nice little diversion for a Friday morning--thanks for posting.

I did surprisingly well even though I'm half convinced that several of the genre names were made up for this game.

Would you say you're losing your Edge?

I discovered that my score matches the number of genres and subgenres of dance music.

That game doesn't know its genres.

It played me a track that was definitely drum & bass, and told me that it was digital hardcore.

I mean, the two genres are related – they're both based on hard and fast breakbeats – but they are not the same.

~20000. I was unfamiliar with Glarbstep or Deep Fritch Techno Dlart.

7705 and I can’t dance to almost any of that and 87% of those genres sounded 100% made up.

Lawn, my, get off of… 10 entries [game over]

52,432 and now I'm grumbling about the difference between minimal house and deep house.

I got 2 right by luck and remembered that I generally don’t like electronic dance music. But I’d dance to it if it was on. I think it’s because in almost all the genres, the bass drum is on every beat, so it doesn’t feel funky or groovy at all to me. I need syncopation and some notes shifted a little behind the beat!

I ended up with 146,511 so I'm pretty good at this apparently.

I was confusing glitch hop with blip hop, which was unrepresented, possibly because it is not dance music.

Florida Breaks is really what confused me. I once, nay twenty years ago, had a night of cocaine in southern central Florida, when in the back of a speeding Lexus I admitted that I didn’t know what a break beat was. After a loud discussion and several audio examples, I still today do not understand what a break beat is.

32,306—I know nothing about EDM subgenres, but took some educated guesses, and actually knew a few of the artists without realising they were in the EDM universe.

56,821 - I got bit several times in a row by track samples that actively did not play the genre of the artist, so you could only get it right (deliberately) by already being familiar with the rest of the unplayed catalog. You can't play ten seconds of french opera singing over light piano and then be like 'NOPE, THIS IS DIGITAL HARDCORE OBVS'

on the flipside, playing nonstop triphop, acid house and darkstep will give me a pretty good streak

80,890 and curse that last question which had three different trance flavours and a song that I argue belongs in at least two of them.

I will happily remain in my housey-trancey-hardhouse-happyhardcore bubble, thank you kindly.
