I have never been this excited for a new Street Fighter game in my life [YouTube][Trailer] “As a series dating back to the 1980s, you normally expect a new Street Fighter game to play it safe. Sure, every generation or two there might be a visual shift, but Street Fighter is Street Fighter, it began as a 1v1 fighting tournament and shall forever be one. Until, that is, Street Fighter 6 came along. I’ll note before we go any further that I’m not a serious fan of this series. I played the shit out of the second, I admired the third’s graphics from afar and have had little to do with it since, since I’m both terrible at fighting games and not really that interested in them. But I am very interested in Street Fighter 6, because it’s fancy new ‘World Tour’ mode looks like everything you could ever dream of when a developer decides its time to shake things up. I'm glad they're leaning into this kind of ridiculousness. Games can be anything and everything we want. More of this please.

It looks like the game has a RPG mode which could be fun, if I didn't suck at fighting games. I'm curious about the box head gang. What's their deal? Also, fighting a refrigerator, is that the standard "destroy object as fast as possible" thing, or does it fight back?

Ah, that's nothing. Tony Jaa fought with a refrigerator in the always amazing Ong-Bak, although I can't find a video.

Note that he fought with a refrigerator, as in, using it to defend himself, but still.

I hate to say this, because I've been maining Blanka since 1991, but the Street Fighter franchise really went belly-up when Capcom abandoned its hand-drawn two-dimensional sprite animation in favor of trendy three-dimensional polygons. 3D animation was an amusing novelty in the Street Fighter EX games (which weren't even developed by Capcom, incidentally), but it's just not Street Fighter.

One of the old Street Fighter games had you beat up a Lexus LS, but a refrigerator that fights back is an exciting development (that might be more exciting if I wasn't one of the weirdos that remembers the Sega Saturn game Fighters Megamix).

I guess part of the issue is that multiplayer will be split between dudes who frame count and dudes who just want to hadoken each other, but I have no idea what their matchmaking is like.

I'm terrible at fighting games, absolutely dog. I just find 2 or 3 moves that work and spam that shit until it brute-forces my way through. That being said, I LOVE playing these types of games. The more recent Mortal Kombat and Injustice games have been a delight b/c they too lean into their own ridiculousness and just roll with all the weird story-beats that don't make any sense.

I should say that even though I've never been into the 3d Street Fighter models, this does look pretty fun. I'm gonna keep my eye on this one. I always enjoyed the Tekken adventure modes, so having that sort of thing in a Street Fighter game definitely appeals to me.

I haven’t thought about a street fighter game since the Sega Saturn era. But am glad to hear it’s still going. I was never any good at 1v1 fighting, but somehow spent years in the mid 90’s as Michael Jordan beating up bad guys

3D animation was an amusing novelty in the Street Fighter EX games (which weren't even developed by Capcom, incidentally), but it's just not Street Fighter.

I've been tooting that 3D-sucks-actually horn a long time too, but I think this is no longer true. They finally have like enough polygons and tools, I guess, that the 3D can look more cartoony and vivid and capture as much style as a 2D game.

Not sure if I can say it for this game in particular; I don't particularly like any of the character designs I saw in the preview -- but then, I haven't loved a fighting game since SamSho2, get out of my bamboo grove.

Pretty much same, and my two main reactions were 1. always here for drunken style and 2. when tf did ryu become a zangief-type tank?
