Not helped by Western embassies requiring custody of a passport to stick a visa in it and then leaving said passports in a safe inside the embassy when evacuated out of the country.

"Apply with local authorities for a renewed passport"? It should be "Sorry we fucked up, but if you show up at any other embassy or border crossing, we know that we were currently holding your visa application, and we will issue you an emergency travel document".

Enough cities have been sacked or destroyed by bands of lightly armed rebel villagers that it seems predictable that city walls will make a comeback.
