Go Latin! In the mid 1960s my father was part of a goodwill tour of South America in a little squadron of British Naval ships. One consequence, from his letters home, was that I have internalised the capital cities of all the countries in Latin America. en route, at each stop he bought a 12" LP of typical local music. I guess it wasn't super cool stuff but when I left home for college, I copied each album onto cassette tapes and played them on the regular. They couldn't fail to make one happy. Several years later, a good friend married a Colombian, and when they came to visit I wheeled out the cassettes and played a few. I was surprised and impressed when she announced "This one is Peruvian, but that's from Argentina". For me each tape was different but it was all wonderful. The idea that styles would consolidate along national lines was a formative part of my education. On the map in my school atlas South America seemed small but it was because that continent was far away. Although of course Irish music was distinctively different from Greek.

I've been learning Spanish and have been listening to a lot of Spanish-speaking music. Couple Mexican artists I've taken to are Natalia Lafourcade's. Her De Todas las Flores is excellent, as is instrumental-rock group AustinTV.
