Astrud Gilberto 1940 - 2023

The Girl From Ipanema. Astrud Giberto, best known as the voice of Bossa Nova, died June 5th at her home in Philadelphia, PA.
Her voice was soft yet assured. She defined for a moment the popular music of Brazil, selling millions of albums and embedding in the consciousness of the time a certain expression of cool. Effortless, refined, intelligent.

We were fortunate to see her perform live in the 1990's at SOB's in NYC. She did not disappoint. She was ripped off by Stan Getz and ignored by her native country. I will never forget hearing her voice for the first on an LP in the 1960's.

My favorite genre-defining accidental superstar. If you listen to any kind of "bossa nova" radio stream you will hear her voice within twenty minutes. She'll be missed.

My mother and I had a contentious relationship for many reasons, but jazz was one of the few areas we could agree on and enjoy together. She turned me on to Astrud Gilberto when I was a teenager and I have loved her voice ever since. Her version of Fly Me to the Moon is still my favorite - the sweet melancholy of her voice is exactly how that song should be sung. RIP Astrud and thank you for sharing your gift with us.

Loved her music. When I heard the news, I was surprised because she (like some others recently) was apparently in the category of "oh my god so sad and also I didn't even know she was still alive".

A success despite the men around her. V to her, forever, and F to the scared petty gatekeeping patriarchy forever.

background on the abysmal treatment she received, from the FPP Jazzwise Obit:
Astrud Gilberto toured the US with Getz and his band, her small son Marcelo in tow, a period made more difficult by the lack of a credit on the original pressing of Getz/Gilberto, by the saxophonist's poor pay and apparent determination that she receive no royalties, and by her outrageously sexist treatment in the Brazilian press and by many Brazilian musicians. Following a concert in Rio in 1965 the US-based Gilberto never performed in her home country again.

Incredible, The Girl From Ipanema was her first professional recording, won a Grammy, went gold…and earned her $120.

So many great performances: how about the 95 wonderful seconds of 'Não Bate O Coração', for example.
