An online gallery for the winners of Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2022 From the Sombrero Galaxy to a moon gleaming next to a skyscraper, to misty green rivers under the aurora borealis and the sun's rays rendered as tree rings, these images brought a dose of wonder to me today
How do you even get a moon shot like that?

Love it! Wish I was in Greenwich to see them up close.

Amazing! I wonder how the clouds look only slightly blurred in "Stabbing into the Stars" by Zihui Hu. Is it a composite or did the clouds just come out that way?

Absolutely stunning. Would love to be in a room full of huge prints of these and just bask in the universe.

More stunners on each shortlist, too. Thanks so much, OP!

From the "people and space" shortlist: Stacks and Stones By Derek Horlock
Anyone know why the stars seem to have a dark shadow that makes them look like Braille points?
(I'm thinking that some heavy-handed digital manipulation was done to get the foreground and sky to be both well exposed. It makes the photo sort of different and interesting--but flawed, in my final opinion.)

My impression is that every astrophotography photo you see has been heavily processed. The photographers will talk about the many, many hours they put into the photos to get them to look interesting. Everybody from people at NASA down to random dudes with Youtube channels will talk about the importance of processing the photo so that it tells a story, and that it's as much of an art as capturing the photos is a science.

I wish I understood the "solar tree" image...is it the sun? Composition related to an actual tree? The image isn't explained.

Hopefully you already know about NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day and check it daily. A full archive (back to its inception in 1995) is available.
