That PBS documentary is unavailable (here) but I've ordered up his 1997 essays from the library for re-reading: The undertaking : life studies from the dismal trade. Thanks for the nudge.

His funeral home is in my home town. I remember him as a compassionate presence several times during difficult situations. His book, The Undertaking, is a favourite of mine.
