A phrase that has been around for as long as the internet has been online is “if you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product”

That's a shout-out, I'm counting it.

This is a great article, and I wish I knew about this site sooner. Thanks for posting it.

It's true, I considered myself someone with at least some ear out for good comics writing (as in, good writing about comics) and this goodbye message is the first I'm learning of their existence.

How are these goodbye articles so touching when I never even read the site? Another site run by actual people bites the dust. Bury it next to The AV Club.

I closed my long-running (as in, it had existed in one form or another for 25 years) comics site last month. I really hadn't updated it since 2018 (except for a post about a comics-related project I was doing on my new site in 2022) so it was clearly essentially done to begin with.

But my friend who was hosting it wanted to get out of hosting but he hated to see it go. The domain is paid up through 2027 so we agreed to make it a static site until then.

I was always pretty small time at my peak but it brought me a lot of good things.

I know we're never going back to the days of smaller sites and sites with specific focuses but I will continue to miss those days. But I can't blame anyone for getting out

(My "new" site may get 20 hits on a good day, but that's mostly because I don't promote it or bother with good SEO or anything now. I just like having a space I control.)
