Comment te dire adieu?

Françoise Hardy, icône de la culture pop, est morte. BBC obit. When we were all young, she was a bit of a heart-throb for Jagger, Bowie and Dylan. And a person in her own right! Comment te dire adieu? - Tous les garçons et les filles. Chapeau!

I wasn't aware of her until a (French) friend posted her obit. I couldn't square her age with the pictures: she looks so contemporary and cool and current!

My dad was a teen in France in the 70s, so I got exposed to quite a lot of French pop culture in my youth, and Françoise Hardy is one of those musicians who’s stayed with me all my life as a familiar, comforting presence. It was nice to know she was still alive and well and living in Paris (to borrow a phrase associated with another brilliant singer) so her death hit me harder than I was expecting. The other day I was listening to her 1977 comeback album Star, and was struck by the song Je ne suis que moi, which I’d never really noticed before. It’s co-written by Hardy and Catherine Lara, and another singer would’ve gone full force, but Hardy underplays it, and a song that should’ve been melodramatic becomes melancholy instead. She was a great artist.

I learned Tous les garçons et les filles in my high school French class. Can still sing it word for word.
