In the past two decades, the oyster population in Mississippi’s Gulf waters has been devastated by both natural and manmade disasters. Among those working to restore oyster habitats is ninth grader Demi Johnson, who was recently recognized by the National Geographic Society for growing more than 1,000 oysters, which are likely to spawn millions more.

Aww, what a cool kid. Way better Silver Award project than whatever garbage I did to get mine. I hope she makes her law school dreams come true.

Go Demi! A pal of m'daughters started at a local oyster farm at about the same age. Gotta say that the work can be brutal hard. The cages get covered in 40-grit barnacles which will rip chunks off your ungloved hand; not to mention the saltwater boils from Staphylococcus.
