Metafilter: #366080

Magic Color Picker understands Metafilter is blue, at least, although it didn't pick the right shade. Need some inspiration (#5A4FCF) for repainting (#B8B8B8)?

"Random colour generator" might be a more accurate name, seeing as the same word produces different colours when the page is refreshed.

I paint and draw, and I also worked as a colour matcher for years in the silk screen industry, where I had to eyeball colour samples then match them for printing.
So, this is a pretty cool toy, but it depends on one's monitor as well though I think it would be useful for an artist spit balling a specific hue of paint for their work.
I imagine there are industrial versions of this that show how to make the actual colour, which I would be interested in seeing.
Thanks for posting this.

It seems to know metafilter is blue, though - I got #2d17cf, #4d11a5 (okay, this was a little more purple), #2d4f8c, #2d4761 on successive tries.

I started typing in random brand names (kelloggs, exxon, bayer, etc) and didn't get anything that resembled the colors I associate with their brand identities (so sorry for saying that). Like, bayer was a brownish purple instead of yellow or brown. It must do something like an image search for $thing and come back with an average of all the color values.

Apparently "paint color" is a pinkish lavender (#F3DAF0).

I'm partial to Pika—feels like magic in my workflow. It says MetaFilter blue is 045a8f "dark denim." It amuses me that it gives the color a name. MF green 9cc754 is named "Lone Hunter," LOL.

It did not do so well with "television, tuned to a dead channel" or "the sky above the port".

It did do well with "barf", "green highlighter pen", and a few others. But it is indeed racist as usual when it comes to the word "skin".

Still, a fun internet toy, possibly useful if I don't know what color mauve is. (I don't, offhand.)

(now I do.)
