A matchstick and a paper cube – a little over 2 minutes of stop motion animation.
Wow. That's stop motion, not CGI..? The preciseness needed to keep the models' positions from scene to scene? Quite the feat.

My guess is that the woodgrain surface with unique markings gave enough identifying locations that you could ensure an item was in the right place by looking at previous frames.

I don’t know if this is what they did but you could also use a projector to put registration marks on the table between exposures. You could use as much or little computer assistance as you want that way (showing where every piece goes in the next frame, or just laying down the same grid every time)
