If they're bringing Winter Soldier vibes to the Sam's first official outing as Cap, I'd say that's a good move. Make the story tight and less sprawling than most MCU offerings these days and they will be just fine.

Nice nod to William Hurt's former tenure as Thaddeus Ross!

Esposito is such a great villain. The man can radiate menace in stillness as effectively as anyone I've seen on a screen.

Somebody on reddit said of Esposito: "He just seems to play characters that straighten their tie a lot."

I am so there. Anthony Mackie does an amazing job as the new Captain America. I kind of hope we get to see what happened to the other Cap - US Agent, maybe?

Hoo boy, I love Giancarlo Esposito, ever since I saw him in Smoke. He's one of those actors whose performances seem just effortless. I can fully relax whenever he's on screen.

I’m not sure whether to be impressed or dismayed that they started the trailer with a meta re-casting joke.

On the one hand, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was one of my favorite MCU movies… On the other, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was probably my least favorite MCU TV series. So, fingers crossed!

Harrison Ford, President.
The Falcon, Captain America.
Gus Fring, Bad Guy.
Red Hulk.

Oh yeah!

Jan. 6 vibes.
Asian conflict.
No visible women. (Oh, a blink and you miss it Black Widow...)

Oh no!

Around the time of the first Obama inauguration, I had the chance to interview him at a showing of a film he produced and acted in (Gospel Hill, I think?). He was one of the sharpest and most engaged individuals I've interviewed. Glad to see him cashing this check with style!

Fun fact: Joe Biden and Harrison Ford are the same age!

Aha. That's Ruth aka Sabra aka probably one of the major reasons this movie (slated for release now for February 2025) has been having major narrative reshoots throughout the first quarter of this year. Consequently she is now apparently a Black Widow, and not so explicitly a Mossad agent.

I'll leave it to y'all's estimation how well that is playing in a fandom that, ironically thanks to Winter Soldier, became staunchly committed to political reads and metas of the MCU-verse.

(How is this my unbearable mefi brand here? Jeez)

I am intellectually ready for Harrison Ford's old man villain period but I'm not sure how emotionally ready I am.

You either die an action hero, or age into an old man villain.

Has Harrison Ford ever done MoCap acting before (aside from the De aging stuff he did in Dial of Destiny) ?

It's a good trailer!

I don't really like Mackie as Cap they way they've done it, I love him as Falcon and as a richly characterized non-central role - not a sidekick but a relatable, human-scale hero who wants to be in a support position. He's a soldier, a team player!

Given the foreshadowing though I would not be surprised if their plan is for him to cede the mantle at the end of this, with the shield and regalia being retired like they were in the comics for a while. They flubbed that storyline in Falcon & Winter Soldier IMO (based on my favorite run of Cap in history) but can reuse parts of it and give Mackie a good exit.

Here's a Nerdist piece on the problematic inclusion of Sabra in the film.

A fair number of folks I follow online are planning to boycott the film over her inclusion and had hoped the extensive reshoots were going to remove the character.

Not in the trailer, but we're also getting Rosa Salazar (of Alita: Battle Angel and Birdbox fame) as Rachel Leighton / Diamondback.

I was promised the return of Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader... An I not going to get it in this movie at all, or is he just not in the trailer?

You can hear his voice as part of the voiceover. He will be in it!

As a reminder to anyone who cares, Marvel was added to the BDS list because of this movie specifically. It should be considered a specific BDS target.

Not to derail but if you do want to see Harrison Ford playing against type and doing it very well then check out What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer.

In addition to Winter Soldier/White Wolf (Sebastian Stan), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Black Widow (Florence Pugh), Thunderbolts will have:

- Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko)
- Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen)
- Red Guardian (David Harbour)
- Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus)

Since it also has Ford, and we saw Val and US Agent in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, I'm assuming that it ties into this movie.

The only other person that absolutely needs to be in it is Bucky and there was a glimpse of him in there.

This feels like it has CA:Winter Soldier vibes to it and I'm all for it.

I do still feel a little nostalgic for Steve though. Just watched the scene of him going through the Smithsonian exhibit and then visiting Peggy and got misty eyed about it.

Good choice to emphasize that Sam is not Steve because that's going to be something everyone thinks about with it. It certainly hampered the series.

The wings and the shield together just don't work for me. Can Sam Wilson pat his head and rub his tummy at the same time? If not, I don't see how he can work the wings and wield the shield at once.

I don't see how he can work the wings and wield the shield at once.

An early scene of the movie shows them attaching Bucky's arm right under his real one, followed by a training montage where he learns new forms of hand-to-hand-to-hand combat.

I am way out of the MCU loop. Does new Captain America have the same supersoldier powers as old Captain America? Or is he just a regular dude with a shield?

Apparently Giancarlo Esposito (prominent in the trailer) and Rosa Salazar (not in the trailer at all because woman) were both added to the movie during reshoots. This thing is going to be an absolute mess of a film.

Has Harrison Ford ever done MoCap acting before .
In a mo cap suit? Not that I'm aware of. But you have to see this behind the scenes footage of him acting with the human stand-in for the CGI dog in The Call of the Wild

Here's a Nerdist piece on the problematic inclusion of Sabra in the film.

I remember reading the article and boy, I can't wait to see how the movie remixes apparently a canon event where Sabra needs to start out racist against Palestinians until the Hulk (or in this case, a Hulk) tells her off? /s maybe it's the kind of narrative moral handholding needed by many I guess.

This looks ... super-heroic. In a good way. (I'm pro-Mackie : "Beyond the Wire" is worth a watch and a re-watch)

For a while in the comic books, just being trained by Cap gave even civilians such as Mary Jane Watson-Parker an edge over at least run-of-the-mill muggers or thugs, etc. I'm sure Sam has at least that much training.
