Happy Birthday, a 1981 song by Scottish band Altered Images, reached #2 in the UK singles chart. Altered Images also released "I could be happy", and "Don't talk to me about love", while lead singer Clare Grogan forged a career in film and TV, most notably in Gregory's Girl. Altered Images are still touring, playing in Worcestershire this summer alongside The Levellers, Holly Johnson, The Wurzels, David Essex, Bananarama and Jason Donovan.

Metafilter's birthday is also my birthday - how kind, you shouldn't have, etc. And joyeux quatorze juillet and happy nonbinary people's day to all who celebrate.

As long as we’re sharing birthday-themed 80s indie rock hits I feel honor-bound as an Icelander to share Ammæli, the Icelandic version of the Sugarcubes’ Birthday.

Til hamingju með 25 ára afmælið, MetaFilter!

The fifteen year old me who had a wild schoolboy crush on Clare Grogan, would no doubt be delighted that his fifty something year old future self would not have changed his mind at all vis-a-vis 2024 Clare.

As with Clare, so with Metafilter. Happy Birthday indeed.

I have a memory of this being the very first music video I ever saw, in (probably) January 1982, on HBO's Video Jukebox. It's not listed on this index of videos, but it must be one of the missing entries during that first month. (We subsequently got MTV as soon as it was available in suburban Illinois, undoubtedly due to my pleading.)

Love this band! All three of these songs are on my current "taking the train to work" playlist.

Grogan was also the original Christine Kochanski in Red Dwarf (as C. P. Grogan) [slyt] (CW: it's 1980's era Red Dwarf, you do the math)

The late, great Laurie Lindeen also wrote a birthday song.

Happy Birthday is my favourite happy song. A fine band, and Gregory's Girl is the most perfect movie.

Altered Images’ Happy Birthday is usually in my bag when I go and DJ with records at a bar, in case someone’s bday it is and I can give them a thrill. Love them.

This always reminds me of Peep Show, where Mark visits Sophie's family for her birthday and they sing this instead of the Happy Birthday song.
