What would happen if Trent Reznor had been transported to 1979? Probably not this, but it’s pretty amusing. SLYT.
You mean what was he doing when he was 14?

the top comment is "We are all god's children and he left us in a hot car" and IMVHO, god left us the keys and this song is the AC blasting, when the gas or the batter runs out is when the sun explodes.

Reznor has said that "Closer" is a tribute to Prince. Sometimes in the right frame of mind I can hear it and understand, but how and why don't stick. They never stick.

I think it turns out any song with a four-on-the-floor beat can be Closer and that's beautiful.

If you can listen to Closer and replace the self-loathing with humor and joie de vivre, this makes sense.

My favourite of this genre is the guy doing karaoke over the ghostbusters theme tune.
