Muffin reigns supreme

Norwegian Olympic swimmer Henrik Christiansen really really really likes the "choccy muffins" served in the Olympic Village.

His love of the chocolate muffins has gone viral.

Bonus: The Washington Post tries to recreate the recipe (gift link).

I may or may not have picked up some chocolate this morning while running errands for the purposes of trying this recipe.

This is very wholesome and excellent! Henrik seems like good people.
Frayed Knot, I'm glad that article gave credit to the baker, though I'm sure the info isn't too hard to find.

Okay, kid, now that you're in the big show, I'm going to let you in on a secret. Lean closer. Here we go.

people really just want to eat a massive pile of chocolate. anything that allows them to do that while somehow disguising that fact will become immensely popular.

[slaps you on back] ok, sport, you're good to go. Knock 'em dead!

I am assuming this is correct, but the athletic youth has convinced me to at least try the recipe. This whole thing is very cute and fun! It's like a visit from the 2012 internet.

Oh, not just chocolate. Melty chocolate combined with fluffy chocolate combined with chunky chocolate combined with wine-dark seas chocolate combined with...

Still, kind of surprised France hasn't been showcasing its more unique desserts. It's hardly a slouch where chocolate is concerned.

Breakfast is the only meal where you can just have dessert for the whole meal and no one bats an eye, and I think that's beautiful.

Also Olympians are basically all a different, superior species from my lazy, undisciplined self, but getting obsessed with a snack on vacation is extremely relatable.

I prefer blueberry muffins for my breakfast cake, but I would try this muffin.

I flew in earlier today to Helsinki, and a plane full of Finnish Olympians arrived at roughly the same time. Because my kids wanted to ride the absurdly long escalators to the train station, my wife went along with them and I found myself with all our luggage in an elevator going a long way down, with an Olympian. I bag fell off my teetering tower of cases, and he picked it up and handed to me. I said thanks, and then asked if he’d had a fun time at the Olympics. He said he’d had to focus, but that everyone was really nice and the food was excellent. Then he paused and said, well, it’s France after all.

Henrik Christiansen is a long-distance swimmer, with high caloric needs: “On my most heavy training days, I can get up to almost 7,000 calories a day.” It's good to see that he's found a tasty and enjoyable way to meet this need!

7,000 calories a day!!!!!!

yep, I was thinking this. many of these athletes are currently running their metabolisms at an insanely high rate and probably can barely mange to get enough food in their pie holes. high caloric-density Parisian bakery items are just what the doctor ordered!!

Someone introduce him to the Chocolate croissant please!

We found chocolate cruffins last weekend in Paris. Basically croissant folded into a muffin shape and baked (they are much denser than the standard croissant). Then filled with chocolate cream. You can see one here.

Honestly, there were a bit much.

They look suspiciously similar to the absolutely wonderful double chocolate muffins that Whole Foods used to sell before they got bought by Bezos and he did his villain turn and ordered them to stop making them.

I'm still plotting my revenge. Unfortunately, I'll probably do it using things delivered by Amazon prime.

Watch the fine videos, please. I've seen video where he spurns a pain au chocolat for the ganache-alike goo at the centre of this muffin. The viral videos are fun, but the star of the show is the muffin.

Cruffins and cro-nuts are a miss-step.

The Chro-nut, perhaps the worlds only time traveling snack food.

Sorry for the derail, perhaps I should have a chro-nut and delete this before I send it.

That is crazy, though. Heated or freshly baked, when the chocolate is still warm or even possessed of a molten core beyond the initial smooth chocolatey resistance - I love ganache but fresh pain au chocolat is something special.

Thanks to this thread I found out Firefox's spellcheck didn't know the word ganache. I added it to the dictionary and hope it feels enriched.

Honestly, the raspberry & pistachio eclair I had for my breakfast pudding was better.

When my husband and I were first courting, he jokingly told me that 'ganache' was the French word for 'tasty'. Naturally I believed him, until some weeks later when I attempted to use it in a sentence.

Salmon have gone up the Seine in recent years*; why not muffin lovers?

* I was extra sad to hear the water was dirty again after the salmon reappeared

Reminds me of a lecture at open uni day at OSU about polar research photography: the water is so cold that you basically do one hour shifts and subsist on a medically prescribed diet of all you can eat cheesecake.
